Courtney,

"Oh George, thanks for thinking that everyone has the money to hire a lawyer."

I don't. Find one that does pro bono work.

"Once I’m done with college, believe me, I’ll be leaving AR but right now it’s not something I can financially afford."

Can you afford to drive to Iowa and just GET married? It will be legal, remember. Then it's up to you to make sure (or at least fight to make sure) your government recognizes you as an equal citizen.

"Don’t assume everyone lives perfectly in an upper class world. My parents are middle class and I’m a working college student. I don’t have the $ for a lawyer but best believe I am active in LGBT issues in my state. Screw you for thinking otherwise."

Good that you're active in LGBT issues, but the issue we're discussing right now is marriage, and your posts told Californians to stop whining (which is exactly what you were doing). I merely pointed out that neither you - NOR THEY - have marriage currently - but ONLY IN YOUR HOME STATES. Go somewhere with no residency requrements and you can still be legally married. I also reminded you that 18,000+ California couples GOT married when it was legal to do so. Now, I am merely encouraging you to do likewise. The 'moving to another state' part can come later.

"If it’s so easy to change the laws, why isn’t same-sex marriage legal in every state if “all” it takes is to get married somewhere else and hire a lawyer?"

Whoever said it was easy? All I did was tell you to stand up for yor Constitutional rights, with some suggestions as to how to do it.

I don't think you should tell other people to stop whining because of ther lack of rights when that's what you're doing. That's all.

Our Founding Fathers feared direct democracy, an example of which is the decision by California voters to reinstate the ban on gay marriage.

Why did the Founders feel that way? They felt that the people are too easily swayed by emotion, passions and demagoguery. The outcome of the battle of Prop. 8 refinforces their fears.

Congratulations are in order for the state of IOWA. Well done.

I was surprised with the ruling as I infrequently visit IOWA. I have found (at least with the people I deal with) are definitely anti gay. I guess I must mix with the wrong people. I wonder if the people I deal with will remain homophobic or change their attitude. Either way congratulations IOWA.

Assistant Polk County Attorney Roger Kuhle said that “state support of same-sex marriage would damage traditional marriage.........” So, here in am in the frozen back woods of Canada and married to the same man I have lived with for over 30 years and my nieghbor's 'traditional' marriage is still undamaged. The truth of the matter is that no one cares anymore. It is a non-issue with the politicians and the religious order has come to realize that the devil has not rained down anything.

My advice to all freedom fighters for human rights is fight harder and educate the masses.

And remember, your Canadian cousins are cheering for you.

The "go to" organization in Iowa, for those who want to help with the upcoming battle to preserve the decision, is One Iowa (www.oneiowa.org).

The decision will stand until at least 2012. That's how long it will take to put a constitutional amendment to a vote of the people. A proposed amendment must be passed, without change, by two successive Iowa legislatures; and the term of each legislature is 2 years.

Iowa doesn't have a residency requirement when it comes to being able to get married in Iowa. It's already certain that there will be a push for one because one could go into effect immediately on enactment.

baby steps, but encouraging. Still frustrating that people want to overrule courts by having the MAJORITY vote on the rights of a MINORITY group. Even if they do, it is only a matter of time before the courts step in and overturn ALL voter-approved bans in all states. The courts are there to ensure mob-rule does not inhibit the rights of a minority group. I believe we aren't too far away from nationwide legalization- and I am ready to bust open the champagne when they do!!

Interesting how a country (OUR COUNTRY) ..constantly BOASTS about Freedom this, and Freedom that..."Liberty & Justice for All" blah blah blah.....EMPTY Meaningless words..that mean SQUAT!

STOP calingl it GAY MARRIAGE - It's Marriage EQUALITY
STOP calling it SAME SEX MARRIAGE - We do NOT call hetero Marriage "Opposite Sex Marriage"

If you don't like Marriage Equality - then DON'T marry someone of the same sex
NO Religion will be forced to Marry anyone they deem "unworthy"
NO Religion will be Locked up or Fined for speaking out against LGBT people - tho Tony Perkins and the AFA WILL LIE and say otherwise(even tho that's something Jesus would NEVER do..IF he ever existed)

America - LIVE UP TO YOUR Constant spread of LIES about Personal Freedoms..Either we are ALL Free, or NONE of us are!

When in America has the Public EVER gotten to VOTE on any other Minority Rights? THEY HAVEN'T!
When in America was Religion USED to FIGHT Equality for Blacks,Women etc etc......TOO MANY TIMES to COUNT!!!

Oh George, thanks for thinking that everyone has the money to hire a lawyer.
Once I'm done with college, believe me, I'll be leaving AR but right now it's not something I can financially afford.
Don't assume everyone lives perfectly in an upper class world. My parents are middle class and I'm a working college student. I don't have the $ for a lawyer but best believe I am active in LGBT issues in my state. Screw you for thinking otherwise.
If it's so easy to change the laws, why isn't same-sex marriage legal in every state if "all" it takes is to get married somewhere else and hire a lawyer?
