Whoa! Sorry – I absolutely was not trying to say anything with a “pissy” attitude here!

I was simply pointing out the facts of the situation, and your comment implied that there was something else going on. Sorry if you took it as something else other than what was intended.

I agree with you completely that this will be a huge boon to the state’s economy, just as it will be in Vermont. Just look at the facts from June-October in California. One of the biggest booms in that state’s economy for the wedding/hospitality industry that’s been seen in decades!

Almost every state (local gov’ts too) is looking to furlough staff. Depending on how a furlough is done, it can have a greater or lesser impact on access to services. In my facility, we’ll be furloughed (“cost saving days”), but our hours and our services won’t change because each person schedules their days off so it doesn’t affect performance. In some states, though, all state offices may close (this includes courts above the municipal level). It’s not discrimination, it’s a lack of money.

The best way to alieviate a ‘Budget shortfall’ is to find a way to bring in additional funds, especially when these funds are not a tax increase, but rather a ‘tax’ that is voluntarily paid by people wanting a ‘license’ to get married… then the big cash goes out and spurs the rest of the economy from the weddings, etc…. which creates job’s, which creates more taxes paid for those wages. GET IT ??? NO MORE BUDGET SHORTFALL !

I must say I’m quite astounded by the Iowa ruling! however, let’s not get lazy. Only 7 Justices struck down the one man/one woman requirements. You can bet that the religious zonks are gonna be coming after us with a lynch mob. Kinda funny actually. Oh how I wish I could’ve been a fly on the office wall of the Mor(m)on headquarters in SLC(porn and meth ditribution capital of the country) when those a-holes got wind of this ruling. LMFAO!!!!!

The article clearly says that the original date selected is a “furlough” date, so NOBODY is going to be getting licenses that day, since the Courts will all be closed. There is nothing sinister going on here, it was simply ah honest mistake when they made the initial ruling – somebody didn’t look at the calendar very closely.

Also, considering the fact that they DO have budget problems, you can be sure that they don’t offer ANYTHING for free. Marriage licenses ALWAYS come with a fee, everywhere. Certainly a new slew of same sex marriages will increase the state and county revenues and help with that budget crisis, just as it did in California, but that’s not going to happen in time for the State to cancel an already scheduled furlough date just for the purpose of opening the Courts on a Friday for this reason only.

Incredibly great news on marriage equality, and even more incredible that it be in a State few would have ever expected this early in the game… this aside, may I ask if there are no licenses being issued to opposite sex couples during this same time frame due to ‘budget cuts’ ??? … and may I ask if these licenses are ‘FREE’, or does Iowa charge a fee (tax) that in fact would help alieviate their budget problems ???
