The last time I checked, people in committed relationships (hopefully that includes married people) had lower rates of sexually transmitted diseases. So, here we have same sex couples lining up in favor of more commitment, not less. No longer willing to have multiple relationships in bars for the rest of their lives. How is this a bad thing...for both public health and society?? This guy is nuts!!

I'm Iowan, and I assure you we are not all like this guy!!

Actually, he should check his facts with the World Health Organization which states that heterosexuals are succumbing in far larger numbers per capita than the gay population worldwide.

>Hurley believes Iowa’s passage of same-sex marriage will lead to higher HIV and syphilis rates in the state.

We've had marriage equality in Massachusetts for six years. Have the rates spiked there? How about in CT, NH, or VT? In VT since civil unions back in '99? And, if so, can you show me research that correlates the two events?

No?

Then shut up. Enough of your conjecture, your nonsense!

Please. These comments make no sense from a public health point of view. In fact, public health would counsel in favor of marriage equality. I explain why here: http://wordinedgewise.org/?p=928

If Iowa can boast of a now well-known young actor Ashton Kutcher (from Iowa) (married to Demi Moore, then it's not all just cows and corn fields.
But all the same, let's not disparage the farmers while our mouths are full of food.
And I like to drive through areas not all paved over and not all filled with concrete, glass and steel structures and shopping malls from time to time while still possible.

Article about Iowa changing...
"In wake of gay marriage decision, observers say Iowa's reputation is changing"
StoryDiscussionCharlotte Eby | Posted: Saturday, April 4, 2009 11:15 pm | (3) Comments
Iowa shocked the world last year when the caucuses helped launch Barack Obama's presidential bid.

And the Iowa Supreme Court ruling Friday allowing same-sex couples to marry has helped dispel its image as a sleepy, Midwestern state, some say.

"People have always thought of Iowa as nice, but not as hip. And so I suppose in some people's eyes, this will make them hip," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

Iowa was thrust into the national limelight Friday when the state's highest court struck down a law that defines marriage as a union only between a man and a woman.

The ruling was a hot topic on Facebook and the blogosphere. Even actor Ashton Kutcher, an Iowa native, and his wife, actress Demi Moore, weighed in favorably on Twitter.

The nation's impressions of Iowa's political leanings are beginning to change, Sabato said, as Iowa has moved into the "liberal vanguard" - at least on the issue of same-sex marriage.

"It was once viewed as being ... a dependably Republican, Midwestern state, and obviously, that's no longer true," Sabato said.

Young voters, who came out in large numbers for Obama, have had a tremendous impact on the gay marriage issue, Sabato said, noting that his students don't consider it controversial.

"They've grown up with gay friends, and it's their civil rights issue," Sabato said.

Michael B. Keegan, president of People for the American Way, a national civil rights organization, said Friday's ruling confirmed the idea that Iowa is at the forefront on issues of equality.

"People who are involved in civil rights have long looked at Iowa as a leader in that area," Keegan said.

Rebecca Ryan of Madison, Wis.,-based Next Generation Consulting, said Iowa laid out the welcome mat for gays and lesbians Friday. The firm helps companies and communities that want to attract young professionals, who she said are looking for places that value people without putting labels on them.

"Iowa is showing the world that it's a welcoming state," said Ryan, a former Iowa resident. "And it will need to continue to do so to retain and attract talented people."

Mark Daley, a prominent Iowa Democratic operative who is openly gay, said the ruling is not shocking from an Iowan's perspective. But he said it might be surprising to outsiders who consider Iowa a "flyover" state.

Daley, a Boston native, moved to Iowa in 2002 to work for the Iowa Democratic Party and more recently served on Hillary Clinton's Iowa caucus campaign. He was a founder of One Iowa, which fights for equality for gays and lesbians.

"What better message can you send about being forward-thinking and about being a welcoming place to live and to work, to raise a family than by allowing every Iowan the right to equality?" Daley said.

Steffen Schmidt, a political science professor at Iowa State University, has a different take on how the ruling will be perceived.

"It adds to the idea that we don't want to dictate to people how people live their lives, which is actually a pretty conservative point of view," Schmidt said.

Iowa's rural image might be hard to shake no matter what happens here politically. Gawker, a gossip Web site, used a picture of cows to illustrate a short item on the gay marriage ruling that asked "Does Iowa have gays?"

"It is a scenic, picturesque place, if you like vast boring expanses of nothing," the site said about Iowa.

Careful everyone, this man is probably not stupid at all. He is blinded by an ideological position informed by irrational beliefs, but stupid? No.

He knows of course that allowing marriage provides stability that is counter to what he says.

And he also knows that blocking marriage will not sto this effect as gays will still have sex married or not.

And, yes, he knows that straights have a horrible record w.r.t. marriage and fidelity (we shouldn't go there, none of us want to be judged for approval to marry!)

But, what he knows better than all that is our opponents are educated in the school of cultist hate...i.e. christianity..., they are schooled to believe anything "leaders" tell them and fact do not matter.....big christian dipshit says gays are bad for society, they believe.

Not stupid....playing to his audience.
