Loading ...Iowa gay marriage foe equates gay sex with smoking risks
The president of the Iowa Family Policy Center, a group that opposes marriage equality, released a statement that made gay sex appear to be a health menace.
“The Iowa Legislature outlawed smoking in an effort to improve health and reduce the medical costs that are often passed on to the state,” Chuck Hurley said, according to the Des Moines Register. “The secondhand impacts of certain homosexual acts are arguably more destructive, and potentially more costly to society than smoking. … Homosexual activity is certainly more dangerous for the individuals who engage in it than is smoking.”
Hurley cited a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control that showed a higher number of gay and bisexual men have HIV and syphilis. The report made no mention of smoking.
Hurley believes Iowa’s passage of same-sex marriage will lead to higher HIV and syphilis rates in the state.
Yeah — that’s right — because we all know that people who get married have only one thing on their mind; to go out and have sex with as many different people as possible. Is this man brain-damaged or was he just born stupid?
I’m surprised that he failed to notice that pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening condition for both mother and child…:-)

And, I fail to see how people who are committed and marry get social diseases like HIV and syphilis..unless they are gonna compare us to the lying cheating bastards that straight men already are..ie tiger woods, any member of the legislature…etc..etc…etc..

As stupid as his comments are, if you follow it to the logical conclusion, if you are really worried about the cost to the state of HIV spreading among gay men then you should be trying to promote marriage and the monogamy that at least theoretically comes with it not fight against it. You can’t stop people from having sex.
As to the disparing comment re: Iowa, I’d remind you that Iowa managed to get gay marriage while most states now have constitutional ammendments against it. Up to now the Iowa legislature has managed to BLOCK attempts to remove that right and the posted comments were made by someone who has LOST. Give Iowans some credit!…
Thanks Matgisunset for the kind words about Iowa, altho i’m not sure we’ll continue to have equality. We have a race for governor coming up soon, and a people favorite former Iowa governor is running again, and he’s against Iowa having gay marriage, one of his GOP opponets has said if he’s elected, on his first day he’s going to use an executive order to repeal it. It’ll be a shame for Iowa to have taken a step forward and then go backwards.
Chuck Hurley is the president of the Iowa Family Policy Center (they only advocate for CERTAIN families) and believe it or not, this man actually has some influence. Which is why it is so nice to see him publicly making a complete fool of himself once again. The more outlandish he gets, the better it is for all of us!
Also, I think perhaps some of you should do a google search on Iowa and civil rights legislation. We’ve done a very good job leading the way, sometimes ahead of the curve by more than 100 years. It is because of that tradition that I am able to have my wife, and because of our current reps that I have been able to keep my wife. I am an incredibly proud Iowan.

Taking care of yourself and using a condom whether you are a gay or a straight man helps with some of that regardless of sexual orientation.
These people are amazing saying that being gay shortens your life. Being careless shortens your life not being gay.
I have seen enough gay men with white or gray hair to know that you can be gay and live a long and happy life if you take care of your health and that of the man you love and if he does the same for you. With a loving, devoted and committed relationship and with taking a few precautions.
Hurley stereotypes gay people, and he clearly knows little about the gay community.
