Iowa gay foes pledge to reverse gay marriage

(Des Moines, Iowa) Iowa opponents of same-sex marriage say they will fight to reverse the court ruling allowing gays to wed, no matter how long it takes.

Same-sex couples began marrying Monday following the state Supreme Court ruling this month striking down a law limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples.

Republicans and social conservatives are now planning on making it an election issue in 2010.

GOP lawmakers blame Democrats for thwarting attempts to advance a constitutional amendment banning gay marriageĀ and say they intend to make it a campaign issue.

“Whether it be the pursuit of a constitutional amendment to give Iowans the right to vote on this issue; the establishment of residency requirements to obtain marriage licenses; or the appointment of future judges — none of these options are possible as long as Chet Culver remains governor and Democrats control the Iowa Legislature,” Paulsen, McKinley and Iowa GOP chairman Matt Strawn said in a statement to the media.

“Democratic legislators who campaigned at home to protect marriage and then hid behind procedural votes in Des Moines to thwart the will of the people will have to answer for their hypocritical actions in 2010.”

Likely GOP gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats said he will use the issue in his battle against Culver in 2010.

“Chet Culver may not be listening to Iowans now, but I’m convinced he’s going to hear them loud and clear on Nov. 2, 2010, when they give him his pink slip and elect a governor who respects the will of the people,” Vander Plaats said.

Social conservatives are planning a separate attack to amend the state constitution – through a Constitutional Convention.

Once every decade, Iowa voters can decide whether to hold a convention. The question is scheduled to go on the ballot in November 2010 and needs only a simple majority.

Conservatives believe that if a Constitutional Convention is approved, they can convince delegates to vote for an amendment limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples.

If voters approve holding a convention, and if enough delegates can be convinced to amend the constitution, the question could be put to voters in a special election, possibly in 2011.

Hundreds of same-sex couples began applying for marriage licenses this week. If the constitution were to be amended, their marriages would be nullified.

    • They never give up, and we can’t either.

But their defeat will be another nail in their coffin, where their rotten beliefs will be exposed for the world to see, and justice will prevail.

And so much of the momentum is a result of Prop 8 and good people realizing what is happening – people who would turn us into a christian Taliban state.

But we have to be so careful of double speak and triple speak from the churches.

Like their Christian love for gay people – if you accept their force conversion, otherwise you are hated. Virtually identical to extremist Islam

Like “Personhood” another charged word from the catholic church. they want to give moment of conception embroyos full legal rights to citizenship. So solutions for eg Altsheimers disease, regrowth of cancerous organs, etc – and many potential life saving medicines will not be developed. Have you ever seen someone rot to a total mental vegtable from Altsheimers – I have. And the monstrosity of the Vatican would condemn millions more to that fate, just because of their ‘beliefs’.

From the same people who excommunicated a mother for getting her was it a 9 or 10 year old daughter an abortion in Brazil. The girl was pregnant with twins,a birth would have prob killed her. But the church hardly slapped on the hand the stepfather who had been raping the daughter. Prob because the Bishops are rapists themselves in one way or another, sex starved deviants.

Seig Heil, Mein ChurchFuhrer. Maybe there is something to the born again theory – look at all the hitlers in the world.

    • We must not sit still and be overconfident, like we were in California. We must work to defeat any attempts to take away marriage equality in Iowa. If we think that it will fail without doing anything, then we set up ourselves for defeat.

    • Religion is the single greatest impediment to the recognition of the inherent citizenship of America’s gay and lesbian citizens.

The argument of dueling bible verses between our supporters and detractors should be between them alone. Both sides need to get out of our lives and let the civil legislative and judicial process take its own course as it has done in Iowa and Vermont.

The travesty of the recent California election with the passage of Prop-Hate should never happen again anywhere else.

    • I would suspect very few, if any, of the religious right (or wrong) could quote what Jesus said were the two greatest commandments. And for those who could one would wonder why they spend their time quoting all the other cherry picked verses except to support their bigotry and evilness – quotes from that poorly written fantasy book where they refer to the god created by man in the image of man to be used as the tool to control man through fear.

The problem with the religious/right is that they have relinquished their ability to reason and think to the pulpit and the right wing ideologists – thinking makes their hair hurt.

    • Fundamental-cases! They just can’t stomach the idea of us pervs getting any recognition from the state. Meanwhile, they pray and do nothing to improve the world…. If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people.

  • Aaron Said: April 29th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
    • Chris Sullivan – Iowa is not a “Bible Belt” state! Regardless, we need to stay unified, alert, and take action to ensure this right stays secure. We have a minimum of two years to educate and change opinions – let’s not waste a minute.

    • When they pull this stunt it only strengthens our hand when it comes time for the USSC..

To ‘take’ right/privileges from a ‘group’ for no reason other than ‘you don’t like it’ Play right into the constitutional federal provisions and protections.

    • I agree with DC. Many people didn’t think Calif. Prop. 8 would pass. The trend is in our favor, but we cannot let down our guard.

    • And if (May All The Gods Forbid This From Happening) were to actually happen and Marriage Equality is eliminated in Iowa. Then all of the same sex couples who got married should have one VERY MASSIVE (or alot of) lawsuits to recover the monies spent on getting a license. The state of Iowa will never be able to afford to pay back all of that money. The state would go broke. If the California Supreme Court allows prop H8 to stay – then All the people that got married before the vote should sue the state to at least return the fee s for the licensing. That is well over 2 million dollars. Then sue the SOB’s that said that prop H8 wouldn’t affect their marriage. Sue them for the costs of the wedding ceremonies.
