Illinois House impeaches Blagojevich

(Springfield, Illinois) The Illinois House has voted to impeach Gov. Rod Blagojevich, an unprecedented step in state history.

The action sets the stage for a Senate trial on whether he should be thrown out of office for corruption and abuse of power.

House members found evidence that the two-term Democrat had abused his power, including improperly spending tax money, adopting programs without legislative approval and violating state hiring laws. He’s denied wrongdoing.

The House began impeachment proceedings after federal authorities arrested Blagojevich Dec. 9. He’s accused, among other things, of attempting to sell an appointment to fill President-elect Barack Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat for political favors.

    • Shades of Bill Clinton! Hopefully the Illinois Senate has more sense than the House.

    • Hopefully the next Illinois governor will be gay-friendly minus the “shadiness”. A corrupt and profane gay-friendly governor is no real favor for the gay community. The gay commnunity loses from being linked to gay-friendliness on one hand but shadiness and corruption on the other. Kind of like being given a “warm and friendly handshake” “filled with “smelly dog-poop” at the same time, so to speak. The gay community has enough to contend with equality-wise without having to wince through with the gov’s stink of corruption at the same time.

Hopefully the “winds of fortune” will dramatically shift direction for the gay community and the next governor will be committed to both cleaning up Illinois politics and to respecting equality for the gay community at the same time and puttng back on track some kind of legal recognition for gay relationships, preferably gay marriage.
