Anyone but Gov. Granholm of Michigan. She's been a huge letdown for the state, the gay community, and the prestige of women in politics.

Actually, the Ginsberg replacement, if young enough, could certainly correct the balance of power. Just not now. But with the passage of 15 years, who knows who will be sitting next to them?

If he gets the opportunity, I hope Obama has the foresight to choose people who are young and who truly value the US Constitution as the document for freedom and equality that it is. New justices will need to be there for a long time to balance out or try to repair the damage done by Thomas, Alito, Roberts, and Scalia.

What's noteworthy about Justice Ginsburg is that during her confirmation hearings (back in the 1990s) she said that she didn't think the U.S. Constitution allowed states (and the federal government) from affording same-sex couples the right to marry. She's also reliably liberal and voted in the majority in Lawrence v. Texas (the anti-sodomy case). She seems like a fighter, I hope she stays on the bench.

L'Orion,
It may because the type of US Supreme Court justice on the bench has the power to impact those cases regarding gay rights that may come before the US Supreme Court and these justices are on the bench FOR YEARS until they retire.

Who is on the US Supreme Court bench could potentially be of some importance to the gay comnunity.

At least this not a story like we've had before of truly zero relevance to the gay community that was in the supermarket tabloid style tale of a moronic bunch of drunk guys pouring cologne into their buddy's crotch as he slept and setting his balls on fire.

At least this story is sensible and has some direct future importance to some of the legal rights of the gay community.

The fact that so many liberal judges are getting old is exactly why it was important for Obama to be elected. If he ends up getting a second term and replacing them, the balance in the court will be maintained.
