We’ll NEVER see an openly gay president in our country, we have never been that progressive and our society’s collective psyche is too entrenched in religion which is at the root of all discriminatory legislation. Well done, Iceland. I predict Denmark and Iceland will get marriage equality long before we will, already five countries in Europe allow it.

Read of the election victory on BBC’s website, and that of Toronto Star. No mention made that Sigurdardottir is lesbian. Part of me thinks her being lesbian is irrelevant to her experience, but part of me wants to read about it and make gay just as distinctive yet routine as being Scottish, or having green eyes.

So if Per-Kristian Foss is the first openly gay person to lead a country as an interim leader, is Johanna Sigurdardottir the first one to lead one in a normal (non-interim) way? Is she the first to be elected by public vote (albeit indirectly via votes for her party)?

Now onto making Iceland the 6th or 7th country with marriage equality. What good does having a Gay or Lesbian leader if we don’t get equality out of it?

And then it’s onto Ireland, then Germany, then Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, New Hampshire, New York, Georgia, California, Australia, New Zealand, France, Andorra, Greece, Israel, Turkey, Ukraine(hot hot guys), Czech Republic(*shudders*), and every single country on the planet.
