@secrity: I disagree. The pace is frustratingly slow and the effect cannot yet be measured, but as more and more same-sex couples have at least some legal recognition of their existence, and legal backing for proclaiming themselves and husbands and wives, the pressure will mount to deal with the reality of the situation everywhere.

Already you’re seeing things like Texas issuing (under appeal) a legal divorce to a same-sex couple even though they never legally recognized the marriage in the first place. As there is more and more case law about all aspects of same-sex families being created, we are, by fiat, becoming incorporated into the legal fabric of society as a whole.

It is surely not the way I wish it were happening, but the slow and steady slogging through the morass of entrenched legal bigotry is the hand we’ve been dealt. We can play a difficult hand, or we can just give up and leave it to others who are willing to work harder.

As long as the Federal government, 40 something states, and possessions don't recognize our marriages; a few states and the District allowing same sex marriage is a futile and hollow gesture.

Legal recognition of same-sex marriage is a wonderful step forward. Now, what are we doing as individuals and as a community to ensure that all married couples, both opposite-sex and same-sex have the support they need to prepare for and live their marriage vows faithfully and get help when they need it.

This was a great step forward, and I'm happy for the residents of D.C. One line in particular bothered me though. “'Equality and justice for all now includes us,' Garner said." Not to be too cynical, but No, it doesn't. While the district sees you as married, the federal government sees you as two unrelated individuals. We should be screaming this inequality from the mountaintops now, because that is one of our next goals, federal recognition of these marriages, right?
I hope these couples use this to bring attention to that fact, the same way I don't call my boyfriend my husband, because I want to use the awkward word "partner" to draw attention to the fact that I cannot marry him in California.
