I’m not sure how much legs it would have. South Africa isn’t exactly the typical African state. It is ruled by a liberal “socialist” party that has abolished the death penalty, banned indoor smoking, allows abortion on demand, and legalized same-sex marriage. These are social policies which would not find much appreciation in any other African country, and are indeed regarded as a bit of an oddity by most of the continent’s leaders (who are mostly ultra-conservative despots).

If the trend holds up, it would be fantastic. If South Africa and other African countries didn’t have so much of their workforce-age population laid low by HIV/AIDS, their economies would be much stronger. You wouldn’t see some of the religious obsession. You would see more people able to live their own lives in peace, and there hasn’t been enough of that in sub-Saharan Africa. Good for them, and good on them for not listening to that overgrown Hitler Youth in Rome.
