Harvey Milk sculpture proposed for Utah Capitol

(Salt Lake City, Utah) A Salt Lake City area man has a unique proposal to counter what he sees as growing homophobia among Utah politicians – a statue to Harvey Milk at the Utah Capitol.

Roger Carrier says the statue, honoring the openly gay San Francisco politician who was assassinated, would serve as a constant reminder of the effects of bigotry to Utah lawmakers.

“When I heard Senator Buttars comments, I was disgusted and appalled,” Carrier told KTVX-televison.

In recent comments to a documentary filmmaker, Buttars compared gay activists to radical Muslims and said they are “probably the greatest threat to America going down.” He also said gay people lack morals.

The remarks drew outrage not only from gays and liberals but also from both sides of the aisle in the Legislature. Senate President Michael Waddoups removed Buttars from a judiciary committee that Buttars chaired and Democrats have called for greater sanctions.

Carrier, who is straight, said he never thought he would hear a public official speak that way, adding that the remarks have hurt Utah’s reputation nationally.

Carrier thinks that a Milk memorial would ” speak volumes about our state.”

“I am doing this out of a sense of justice for the gay community and not just for the gay community, it’s for everybody,” he told KTVX.

A retired teacher, Carrier said he believes same-sex marriage or civil unions are inevitable in the state.

    • What a wonderful idea. Maybe they can place the statute just down from the one of Bring’em Young that’s pointing an arm toward the Great Salt Lake. The statue of Harvey could be facing that of Prophet Young and raising and index finger toward the Wasatch Mountains.

    • The statue had better be made from solid stainless steel with a teflon exterior. Something like that might then survive Utah.

    • Bravo to Mr. Carrier!

I think EVERY state capitol should have a Harvey Milk statue, don’t you?

    • this is as likely to happen as a gay friendly bill being passed down to the governor’s desk.if it ever goes up,one or more of the bigots in the state will just knock it down someday.the bglt’s in utah need more than a statue.they need decent treatment & they’re not getting it.i think he should take the statue money & donate to a worthy bglt charity if he wants to help us & his beloved state that much.

    • Istead of all the MLK blvd. we can have HBM (harvey bernard milk) blvd…. ya that wont happen in my lifetime. just like “marriage” ya right.

but I do give Mr. Carrier credit for even making the “suggestion” However, i wont be taking my “gay dollard” to spend in CrackTAH anytime soon.

Also, I am scared the mormons will try to abduct me and give me some sorta anal probe or force me to wear those white under garments, ewhh….

    • Um…..This so NOT the place for a statue of Mr. Milk. Please do NOT disgrace the memory of Harvey Milk by erecting this statue in one of this country’s most BACKWARD states!

    • It is a great idea, but I fear a waste of time, effort and money. I see it being continually vandlized by the crazy haters in Utah. Very sad commentary from a state that professes it’s Christianity.

    • I think this is a very bold, albeit dangerous idea that could backfire on the LGBT community and Mr. Carrier. The wounds from the decision of Prop 8 are still too fresh to invoke another confrontation. It is never a bad idea to have such courage Mr. Carrier.

    • Instead of fearing backlash, I think we should just do our homework and then act as best we can, factoring in the inevitable backlash.

I’m not advocating being reckless. But I think we do ourselves a disservice when we inhibit ourselves solely because “ooo, they’re gonna get mad at us and fight us.” So, what else is new?!

    • I THINK THAT ANYONE THAT THINKS LIKE THAT AND SPEAKS LIKE THAT SHOULD NOT BELONG IN PUBLIC OFFICE BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT HURTS THE UNITED STATES. SOMEONE LIKE THAT, GETS PEOPLE WORKED UP AND THEY GO AND DO SOMEYHING STUPID, THEN THEY WILL TURN AROUND AND SAY WELL, I DID’T TELL THEM TO DO THAT. GAY PEOPLE HAVE A RIGHT JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. THEY PAY TAXES AND WHATEVER ELSE THEY NEED TO PAY. THIS IS THEIR COUNTRY TOO. THEY ARE AMERICANS AND IT DOES NOT SAY ANYWHERE IN WRITTING THAT IF YOU ARE GAY YOU ARE NOT AMERICAN.
