Group to out signers of anti-gay petitions

A group called WhoSigned.org says it will publicize the names of people signing petitions for Referendum 71, which seeks a public vote to overturn a new expansion of Washington’s same-sex partnerships.
WhoSigned.org says it’s partnering with the gay rights group KnowThyNeighbor.org to put the names online. In a statement Monday, WhoSigned.org says it expects people who see the names online to contact the signers for what may be uncomfortable talks about gay rights.
Sponsors of Referendum 71 have until July 25 to collect about 121,000 signatures to make the fall ballot. The referendum seeks to overturn the latest expansion of the domestic partner law, which would give partners the same state rights as married couples.

The Anti-gays never play fair.. its time we did the same.. its time for the revolution, this is WAR!!
these uncomfortable talks with people who support equal rights for all people may just be what we need to happen. those people who approach people who support fair treatment may end up learning the truth and come to support us. I for one would welcome that opportunity to share my views. Bring it on.
I know of a mate of mine in Sydney, Australia who supports the “name-and-shame” laws there – it it sort of the same here with this mantality, because it does work!!
Who came up with the idea for petitions that have to include addresses, names, phone numbers, town/suburb, etc – you have to love that! I am sick and tired of being pushed around and bullied by the Washington Values Alliance (WVA) – OK thats it, NO MORE MR NICE GAY MAN. Lets turn back the clock at stonewall riots in 1969 and FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT all over again for our decent civil right for basic domestic partnerships “the all-but-marriage ones”!!!!!!!
By the way the bigots and anti-gays are hurting their senior citizens over 62 who do register as domestic partners. REMEMBER DPs [domestic partnerships] ARE NOT JUST FOR GAYS!!!!!!
Thank god for an override in Nevada hey, no me and my boyfriend can play the pokies have fun in Las Vagas and register our relationship on the first day – October 1, 2009 is it??? I hope my friends and a senior citizen I know personally in Seattle, WA will not suffer, because of the STUPID Refarendum 71. She is registered in a domestic partnership with her partner, who have been together for 10 years now with Lester a brilliant and very clever male, who even still works.
Maybe atleast some of these folks will change their minds when they start hearing from us. That will be a plus.
Domestic partnership expansion is not hurting anybody and not hurting anybody’s religions. The Bible may be against gay marriages, but the bible is NOT against domestic partnership expansions. Anti-gay conservative people need to realize we (gays/lesbians) are real people and we are no different than anybody else in America. Love comes in all kinds and there is nothing wrong with love. Heterosexuals have no rights to say what gay people can and cannot do or who to love; that is against their bibles and God. God loves all gays and straights.
The referendum nuts make us feel pain, anxiety and worry, so why shouldn’t they experience the joy of knowing that their gay neighbors, friends, relatives and co-workers know what they did and experience a “refreshingly chilly freeze of cold, icy anger” when they meet face to face the people they victimized with their referendum signatures? No more cheery greetings, no more invitations to dinner, no more help when help is needed, the silent treatment, the cold stares, the doors closed in faces, people hanging up the phone, purposefully forgetting birthdays and anniversaries, the demands to keep your dog off our lawn, park in your own space! the cheery little list of fallouts from the signing this could go on and on, and frankly all of that is well deserved. How do you face the people (whom you personally know) who “did dirt” on you knowing their big fat open “secret” that they didn’t think you would know?
But it is a good thing that one knows so that the people who sign this can be confronted with how they hurt and damaged other people’s lives and be given something “more” to think about as they find friendships and relationships collapsing around them. As soon as this is found out, the news that so and so signed this malicious crap should be spread to everyone gay and gay-friendly whom both the signer and informer knows that the signer can then experience the joy of a number of people turning against him or her.
Matthew – the “Bible” isn’t against gay marriage because the concept of gay marriage did not exist in that part of the world at that time. The concept of a homsexual orientation, a gay identity if you will, did not exist either. Jesus himself made no statement whatsoever regarding homosexual people or activity. The Bible – a collection of stories written by different authors, most long after the fact, with different points of view – often contradictory and always reflective of the sensibilities of the times it was written in… selectively compiled… is not “the word of God”. It’s man’s quite imperfect attempt to understand God in some fashion during that time. Today it has become little more than, as the late George Carlin described it, “America’s favorite national thatrical prop”. Instead of being a positive force, a collection of stories to provide a very general framework for living one’s life and certainly always open to reinterpretation – it is now used as a weapon of division and hatred.

BIGOTS BEWARE! WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE!
Cheers,
Bud
My partner and I look forward to making calls to signers asking them why it is our domestic partnership should be diminished. We registered just a couple of months ago after having a healthcare access issue last year. Down with christian extremists!
Sad thing about this is that I found a few family members on these lists… =( But it’s definitely something that needs to happen. Let’s all hope it ends well.
Great idea… I am sure they have found it is legal.
Talks…yes, but keep showing pictures of gay families…e.g. with parents, children, sibs, etc. That is what Bill Clinton said changed his mind. “When he saw gays with children.”
The anti-gay rights side always says that they don’t want the “activist” judiciary making law. They want laws made through the legislature. O.K. So when laws are made through the legislature, they start petition drives to re-vote and overule the legislature. Referendums are the easy way to make law. No need for a legislature, I guess.
It’s nice to see this story is second to the main article on seattletimed.org.

I wonder if this is going publicity is going to convince less people to sign out of fear of being exposed or motivate more people to repeal the rights. It’s difficult to judge how effective this strategy is, but it seems like the right thing to do.
Good idea. You want to be a bigot, you don’t get the cover of privacy.
