GLAAD pushes for ABC to rethink ending soap opera’s gay storyline

The ABC soap opera “One Life to Live” is eliminating its gay storyline. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation announced Friday it is pushing for the network to review the decision.

“Last summer, ‘One Life to Live’ brought a groundbreaking relationship into the homes of millions with Kyle and Fish’s story, one that built acceptance and understanding of gay people,” said Jarrett Barrios, president of GLAAD, in a statement. “While we understand that the close of storylines is a frequent occurrence on daytime dramas, canceling this story just as it gains momentum is a step backward in ABC Daytime’s representation of the lives of gay Americans.”

ABC responded with a statement saying there is a chance the storyline will return at some point.

“The groundbreaking Kyle-Fish relationship on ‘One Life to Live’ was embraced by fans both as a great story and a fair and honest reflection of the LGBT community. We’re glad their story resonated with the audience, and understand the fans’ disappointment now that it has concluded. The show has a history of bringing LGBT stories to the screen — earning two GLAAD awards in the process — as well as returning popular characters when they serve the ongoing story. These great characters remain in Llanview, and while there are no immediate plans to advance their story, the door is always open for their return,” the network said in a statement.

The storyline for the couple ends in April.

    • One Life to Live has done for the GLBT community what the acclaimed actor Mr. Bill Cosby did for the African-American community with his the Cosby Show. They lifted us up out of the “dunghill thinking” we held concerning ourselves ans well as others. So this couple is about be removed. So who will get the opportunity to set a good example next.Much thanks to ABC and all the media who take the time to show us ourselves at our best and worst for the sake of growing us in understanding of one another.

    • Don’t you get it?

ABC already for the kudos and the audience bump that their BUSINESS DECISION was targeted at.

You can’t expect them to continue a storyline they adopted ONLY for commercial reasons? Even I am not naive enough to believe that they had any other motivation but an increased bottom line.

    • Hooray for daytime soaps. Beaming awareness straight into the badlands of suburbia, the trailer parks and small towns that need it the most. More useful than a thousand Pride parades.

    • The fact is that they are afraid of the Midwestern and Southern house frau viewership. If you really want them to keep Kish, we have to have women and “women” be the one write in and complain.

    • In ABC’s defense most soap opera couples do break up at least once during their fictional relationships. To that end, over on “As the World Turns” it looks like Luke may leave Noah and end up with Dr. Oliver Reid (hooray!).

Perhaps Fish and Kyle will eventually find their way back together. In the mean time, ABC implied that the relationship between the two would be nixed rather than the characters. Consequently, Fish may be able to continue his work on the show as a police officer, a role that undoubtedly introduces the American populace to the unsung contributions gay and lesbian individuals make to the real world.

    • >They could both get new boyfriends.

…and then jealousy and backstabbing ensue! ;-)

    • New boyfriends – backstabbing and jealousy – perhaps an attempted murder.

      Now THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT! :D :D

    • I can’t believe this i have been a long time fan of the show, on and off for years. I recently came came back to the show full force because i’ve been so wrapped up in the oliver storyline it would be a real shame to take his storyline out of the forefront. I know I, and all the other fans would really feel the loss.
