German zoo: Gay penguin pair raising chick

(Berlin) A German zoo says a pair of gay male penguins are raising a chick from an egg abandoned by its parents.

Bremerhaven zoo veterinarian Joachim Schoene says the egg was placed in the male penguins’ nest after its parents rejected it in late April. The males incubated it for some 30 days before it hatched and have continued to care for it. The chick’s gender is not yet known.

Schoene said the male birds, named Z and Vielpunkt, are one of three same-sex pairs among the zoo’s 20 Humboldt penguins that have attempted to mate.

Homosexual behavior has been documented in many animal species.

The zoo said in a statement on its Web site Thursday that “sex and coupling in our world don’t always have something to do with reproduction.”

    • With homosexuality a common phenomenon in other animal species besides humans (over 400 different ones), it’s wonderful for gays and lesbians to be reminded that we are completely natural. :-)

    • That’s beautiful.

I wonder if we have any Gay or Lesbian penguins at Mystic Aquarium?

Thats why we love our Mother Nature!

      Go Green!

    • Maybe the Republicans and religious bigoted nut-face fuckers will be more tolerate and might just learn something for once in their 1000 year lives about homosexuality since that all living things are capable of homosexual relationships (even germs and viruses).

    • Paul of Oregon… calm down. Not all republicans are homophobic (Even Dick Cheney with all of his evil doings supports gay marriage…) and not all religious people are homophobic. And germs and viruses? I don’t think they have gender let alone relationships with eachother.. but hey, I’m no biologist.

    • Germs and viruses? By germs I assume you are meaning bacteria, but bacteria are singled celled organisms with no reproductive organs…thus they can’t be homosexual or heterosexual. And viruses are not technically classified as living since they can not reproduce on their own.

    • No, the religious fanatics probably think that homosexual animals are influenced by the devil; seeking to destroy traditional heterosexual animal couples in the whole animal kingdom!

    • That is totally adorable! I love it!

    • Such a great story. Amazing that so many people in this world and our country (which is supposed to be all about equality and freedom) do not accept love in all forms. Love (not hate) should be encouraged instead of stifled. I am sure there are those that would rather see the chick die than have evil, society-destroying homo’s as loving parents. Just ask many children who need a loving home in this country but don’t have one because people feel our love is ‘wrong’.

    • >“sex and coupling in our world don’t always have something to do with reproduction.”

I think that raising a young one has something to do with reproduction! When you expand “child care” out to include day car, pediatrics, counseling (my profession), teaching, being good aunts and uncles, and so on, then a *lot* of gay people play roles in the raising of the next generation.

    • Wow! The parallels to the human species abound!

    • Paul of oregon: you don’t sound very tolerant yourself–please make it clear that you do not represent our community in any future responses–esp when speaking to people outside of our community.

    • Wow ! Not only did these two choose to be gay – - they chose to be penguins!
      Incredible – - – -
      – - Dobson is going to want to get an Ex-penguin movement started right away!

    • I am heartened by the reasoned and quick repudiation of Paul of Oregon.

Unless he’s a hot twink that thinks I’m cute, in which case you are all going to hell and God’s fury shall be upon yee.

      Heh.

    • I remember when I first heard about Silo and Roy! They raised a chick as well! Unfortunately Silo is now with a female and Roy is still gay and single :(
