German schools angry over church abuse scandal

(Munich) German educators sharply criticized Catholic church officials for their handling of a spiraling child abuse scandal even as more alledged victims came forward Thursday, including a former member of the all-boys choir led by the pope’s brother.
The uproar came a day before Germany’s highest bishop was to meet Pope Benedict XVI in Rome.Germany’s top education representative, Ludwig Spaenle, blasted the church for failing to report cases of physical and sexual abuse in a timely fashion.
“Internal church guidelines as well as school authority directives to report criminal offenses instantly have been circumvented,” Spaenle, who is president of Germany’s 16 education ministers, was quoted as saying by the Passauer Neue Presse newspaper. Church officials need to put “everything on the table.”
Spaenle and his colleagues set up a task force to come up with a new strategy against sexual abuse in schools.
“For us there is ‘zero tolerance’ for the perpetrators,” he said in a statement Thursday.
At least 170 former students from Catholic schools in Germany have come forward with claims of sexual abuse recently and others have spoken of physical abuse.
Wolfgang Blaschka, a 52-year-old graphic designer, told The Associated Press that corporate punishment was the rule, not the exception, when he was a student at the Etterzhausen school just outside Regensburg.
“It was a climate of terror and oppression,” he told the AP, saying one principal grabbed him by the hair and “lifted me into the air.”
Blaschka spent two years at the school before joining the prestigious Regensburger Domspatzen Choir in 1968, which was led by the Rev. Georg Ratzinger, the pope’s brother, from 1964-1994.
“The misery was right in front of his door. He must have known,” said Blaschka, who added that Ratzinger himself hit him.
“I myself have been slapped in the face by him,” he said. “He wasn’t a sadist, but he was obsessed with music.”
The scandal has clearly shaken the Vatican. On Friday, Pope Benedict XVI meets with Robert Zollitsch, the head of the German Bishops Conference, just weeks after he summoned Irish bishops to Rome to hear about the Irish abuse cases. The pope has not commented personally on the German scandal.
On Wednesday, the Vatican’s U.N. envoy dedicated his entire speech to a U.N. meeting on children’s rights to the matter of sexual abuse of minors. Archbishop Silvano Tomasi insisted that protecting the young was “high on the agenda” of all church institutions, as was providing assistance to victims.
But he seemed to imply the church was not entirely at fault, saying what was needed to prevent more abuse was a “culture of respect of the human rights and human dignity of every child” – and improved screening for caregivers and teachers.
Petra Dorsch-Jungsberger, a former Munich communications professor who specializes in church matters, said everyone in Germany was waiting for the pope come forward and offer guidance. She said Benedict might be facing the greatest moral issue for the Roman Catholic Church since World War II.
“He is standing with his back against the wall,” Dorsch-Jungsberger told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
The Roman Catholic Church has been hit by years of sexual abuse claims in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia and other countries. Yet the German abuse allegations are particularly sensitive because Germany is the pope’s homeland and because some of the scandals involve the choir that the pope’s brother, the Rev. Georg Ratzinger, led for 30 years.
Dorsch-Jungsberger said it’s likely that more details will emerge about the abuse cases in Germany.
“This issue is not at its end by a long shot,” she said. “We can expect a few surprises.”

What a bunch of child molesters the catholics are!
Oh my, things aren’t looking so good (and haven’t for decades, possibly centuries) for that guy who wears dresses in Rome! And the fact that his brother may have some involvement in this illicit affair, should not be surprising.
this horrible cult has been abusing people for 2 centuries. Now we here the hypocrisy of a voluntary club, or cult…nobody is forced to be a member remember….strengthening its commitment to protect children (and even deflecting blame with oblique references to “screening caregivers”).
Who joins a club that admits if you bring your children along they are in danger of being raped, and to make you feel better they hire people whose job it is to “protect children”.
That’s like vacationing on an island with only child molesters living there and complaining to the travel agent they don’t have enough cops to protect your children.
Parents should run as fast as they can from this horrible cult.
What an irony, many of those parents are parents only because of the cults irresponsible position on sex and procreation.
I do believe this cult is extremely harmful, of course, but I continue to question why people willingly put themselves in harm’s way.
The educators should be angry, they have been betrayed, just liked the victims. I grew up catholic, went to mass and catholic school, it’s a wonder we survived. Whenever something “bad” happened in the parrish, it was “close the doors and close the blinds, so noone on the outside knows that we are not perfect”. We were taught to hide and keep quiet. I can’t tell you all of the skeletons that have come out of the closet since then, many are too hard to bring back up. I hope the victims get something out of this, but it won’t be trust or justification, it might just be acknowledgement or an explanation.
Just googel catholic church abuse and you will see it is happening all over the world.
And the church scapegoated gays. But the USA church’s multimillion dollar investigation by a semi independentgroup said it was due to a breakdown in discipline. And that the abuse level was the same re gay vs str8 priests.
And the big question is why the church hid the abuse for generations, and simply moved the vile offenders to new locations, where they could continue their crimes.
My take on it – Priests bring in money and minds. And some of the criminal priests are now bishops, cardinals, and maybe even RATZInger himself.
Their back is too the wall. Their crimes over 1500 years – the crusades against the muslims, the 1000 year dark ages, the burning of maybe a million witches during wwii, and of course the catholic Hitler, who used the churches hatred of the Jews to get elected and give us WWII. And they have yet to excommunicate him.
Somewhere there is a catalyst that will wake up the majority of good catholics, and the church, as it is constituted, will go to the dust bin of history and horrors.

Next time the Catholic Church is trying to stop marriage equality in some state we need to run adds about how messed up they are.
Tom in Long Beach
And don’t forget that the current pope was an active member of Hitler’s youth.
The Catholic Church is a JOKE! They preach only hate and intolerance. They are against Equal Marriage Rights; yet allow PEDOPHILIA, CHILD ABUSE and LYING to further their AGENDA! SHAME ON THE POPE. Where is the apology to these victims and their families????
The catholic church will scapegoat and witch hunt the gay priests and seminarians in response. Won’t solve a thing.
The pope’s brother is a Nazi thug, just like all church officials.
The church just *refuses* to acknowledge any authority other than themselves…it’s more important to them to retain power/control than it is to protect children. Ugh!
Honestly I don’t want the catholic church to support gay marriage because other people might think we are just like the catholic priests. When my partner and I have a child or children we’re still discussing how many he wants one or none and I want three. I am certainly never letting any of my future children near a catholic priest, that’s for sure.
