General Motors pulls gay themed commercials from the internet

General Motors has ordered all videos created for their Chevrolet “Gay Day at the Movies” promotion be removed from You Tube. The videos, which featured amateur footage of two “go go boys” washing a Camaro, were deemed inappropriate by GM.

“The video was not appropriate and not in good taste,” said GM spokesman Dave Barthmuss. The videos were seen as a bad representation for the company by GM executives said Barthmuss.

In the videos, two men washed a Chevy Camaro wearing nothing but yellow underwear with the word CAMARO on it. The boys were nicknamed the Bumble Bee Boys after a character from the recent Transformers movie, a yellow Camaro named Bumblebee.

The videos are no longer available online.

On June 28, Chevrolet held a “Gay Day at the Movies” promotional event and screening of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen for their gay customers.

    • If they’ve banned two go go boys, then they should not be allowed to promote scantily clad women doing the same. Quite frankly, GM can go down the toilet, notorious for ugly design along with Chrysler.

    • We’re expecting something different since Obama became CEO of GM?
Or is becoming CEO of GM, or however else they’re spinning the government taking over GM.
I mean, Barack Obama is soooo demonstrative of his words about supporting GLBT equality and junk.

    • Aw – yes, I get the idea, and support the idea that gays shouldn’t be playing up to the stereotypes, eg naked men. Prob giving all the maggot christian homophobes a boner named desire.

But for GM, forget that new Malibu. Japanese cars last three times as long with hardly a repair. Vs the endless troubles I had with my 70s, 80s, and 90’s mid / full size gas hog GM vehicles.

    • Gee I think that they had second thoughts about how appropriate it was, probably more along the lines that its inappropriate to represent their gay customers as go go boys washing cars in their underwear. For all we know they are working on something that plays less to stereotypes and heck maybe even gives information on why you would want to buy the car. I think that that add even though it sounds sexy was not in good taste (after all the same thing with women is not really in good taste why should it be just because it is gay men?)

    • I’m really glad I sold ALL of my GM stock. F**K GM, everyone should boycott Buick, GMC, and Cadillac.. Go Ford!

    • Caving in to the homophobic fringe once again .. I fail to see how two guys in yellow underwear washing a car tarnishes ones image. Wanna bet if it has been two busty blond females, it would be great for GM’s image? All the more reason to hope GM bites the dust for good! Be sure to check out the new FORDS = HOT!.. and they didn’t use my tax money to pay outlandish top brass bonues – the ones who make calls like this!

    • Ironically what is actully in bad taste are the ugly-ass GM-built gas-guzzling land yachts roaming the roads today. I’m sure the go-go boys made them look really good. GM management needs to pull their heads out. I mean who really wants a giant ugly cadillac hybrid SUV that gets a whole 20 mpg?! That’s the best they have to offer? Rediculous. Examples like this are enough to answer why they are failing in business and why they deserve to do so. Indian imports are on the way!!

    • You need to get a declaration from GM that they would also not dream of using near naked women in their promotional material. Then everything is fine. Otherwise, indeed, protest.

    • Interesting double standard I see, since they never had a problem showing women in bikinis? Good business practices too; alienating an entire group of potential customers. This is funny since they need all the potential buyers they can get; more brilliant management strategy on their part…LOL.

    • I viewed the spot on B Cast and left these comments on that site.

After viewing a major portion of this B Cast regarding the removal of the Chevy Gaymaro video, I have a comment that is quite different from any that I’ve read so far. Do you remember the publicity gained by Coca Cola when they came out with New Coke? Do you recall the amount of un-paid publicity regarding the upcoming movie “Last Temptation of Christ?” What better way to get the otherwise indifferent general public to become interested and informed about something that couldn’t be bought at any price.

The guys in yellow jockeys didn’t offend me nearly so much as the frequent use of the term “yanked” in reference to this video. As stated, this is no different than the tv and print ads from years past with suductive female models selling cars. The only difference is the “typical double standard” that is still alive and well in American society. Give me some scantily clad men any day instead of the female beauties that seem OK with the public.

Come on guys and gals, do you really think the Wall Street types don’t know how to get free publicity for a movie that by all accounts is a stinker?

    • Guess I’ll just file this Cadillac sales flyer in the trash.

  • AR Said: July 10th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
    • Yes for my Toyota Camry! Outrageous double standard . . . women are used as sexual tools to sell cars, yet men cannot. GM has been able to offend the glbt population as well as women. Brava . . . jerks.

    • Check out http://www.autoshowgayday.com; if it was GM slapping the gay community in the face, or caving in to the Religious Right, why would they allow their banner to fly so proudly as the major corporate sponsor? Do Toyota or Hyundai/Kia sponsor similar events in LA, because unlike the Big 3, I can’t recall either of them sponsoring anything gay-related in the Detroit area- and I have their main North American tech centers almost literally in my backyard. Ads like that just give the AFA and FOF more ammunition to use against the gay community- they use it as proof that being gay is all about sex and lust.

    • I’m no prude myself, but I can cut chevy some slack on this one if indeed the bumble bee boys were in underwear. Even though a girl’s swimsuit bikini bottom is the same thing, on a boy, it’s saying, “Here I am in my underwear.”
