Gay vet brutally murdered

(Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania) A 19-year old man has been charged with murder in the multiple stabbing death of a 21-year old gay Army veteran.

Michael Goucher had been reported missing by his uncle.  Goucher’s car was found earlier this week abandoned on a rural road in Price Township. On Wednesday, Goucher’s body was discovered in a nearby wooded area. He had been stabbed more than 20 times.

Police said that evidence found in the vehicle led them to Shawn Freemore, and that under questioning Freemore confessed.

According to court documents Freemore said he met Goucher in a chat room and the two men agreed to have sex. He said they had the liaison in Goucher’s car.

Earlier this month he agreed to a second hookup with Goucher, again in the car.  But, the court documents, citing Freemore’s confession, said that Freemore changed his mind at the last minute. Armed with a knife, Freemore allegedly told police he ordered Goucher out of the car and then stabbed him in the neck.

Groucher fell to the ground, and according to the court documents, as he tried to get up Freemore stabbed him 19 times in the stomach.

Freemore told police he went through Groucher’s pants to find the car keys, then covered the body with snow. He then drove the car off, later abandoning it and walking home.

Relatives told The Pocono Record that Groucher joined the Army after graduating high school in 2006. He was stationed for two years in Alaska as a convoy driver and mechanic.

While on leave from the military he volunteered with the East Stroudsburg Crime Watch. After completing his military service, Goucher worked as a custodian at an area high school and was the assistant organist at a local church.

He was out to his family. “If there’s a lesson to be taken from this tragedy, it’s to warn kids, especially the younger kids, about the danger of getting together with strangers they meet online,” Groucher’s uncle, William Searfoss, told The Pocono Record.

Freemore has a criminal record for burglary, shoplifting and drug paraphernalia possession.

    • In this backwater [crap]thole of a country this murderer will probably receive a gold medal of honor! It’s always been a complete puzzle to me why any true gay male would ever want to be a part of ANY organization which openly [craps] all over us?!? Military, church, ect, ect, ect. This sad list goes on and on and on…Is it for job security? For “benefits” that a gay male feels he can’t receive anywhere else? Some sort of misdirected feeling of “pride” and “honor” in wanting to serve in an organization whose ONLY purpose is imposing death and discrimination upon others??? Is one’s “need” to “fit” in with disgusting hetero society SO great that he would have to lower himself to the level of the U.S. Military or some half assed church group? Completely baffles me folks! I’m hearing a LOT of pro military rhetoric coming from the gay community these days and find it EXTREMELY sickening and heart wrenching! if you truly possess THAT low of an IQ level, then yes, maybe military service is for you, but please don’t go spouting this redundant drivel about “defending’ my freedoms(which never existed in this poor excuse of a “democracy” to begin with)! i can move to f**king Nepal and have more freedoms. Peace out.

    • Lets hope the killer gets more than three years, like the guy/terrorist who killed Sean Kennedy in South Carolina.

    • I think there is a whole lot more to this story. First Shawn Freemore admits on his myspace page to being bisexual – but leans more towards guys. This removes this from a hate crime. In his statement he told the police he changed his mind about having sex and got out of the car and began walking home, when Michael Goucher got out of the car and went after him, and it was then that he stabbed him. I far from condone Shawn Freemore’s actions, and believe that if you use violence to solve your problems, you deserve to be punished. But I think this was a relationship that went horribly wrong for reasons we may never completely know, not a hate crime. This said, my sympathy goes out to the family of Michael Goucher – no one should lose a son or daughter this way – and I hope one day they will not only find justice for their terrible lose, but also some peace.

    • I am also an Army veteran. I resigned my commission in protest of slime bag Clintons DADT compromise. I agree that online dating is not without risk. But the guy that killed this kid was not normal. I am sure if you look in to his background you will find a kid that was born gay and was raised to be a homophobe. This is not an excuse, but it seems to be a common event.

I have many friends that serve proudly in the Military. And they are more out than you can imagine. God Bless them all.

    • I just wanted to say that I live not far from where Michael was killed and it has been on our local news since he was found. His family is very upset and have been interviewed by the local media here they were crying and said what a wonderful man he was told of his volunteer work and his affiliation with his church and how he touched everyone he came in contact with

    • I’m a gay Army vet myself with 10 years in the Infantry. I met my partner of 8 years on the internet and we had a long-distance relationship for over a year before we met face to face for the first time.
I’ve known several folks both gay and hetero who have hooked up into long term relationships over the net.
Internet dating, hookups and relationships can be healthy, adventurous and help you find a life partner as long as you use some common sense when meeting someone for the first time. Make sure it’s a public setting. If they refuse a public meeting then that should be a serious warning sign.

    • Gay people don’t join the military because they want to stand out; they join because they want to blend into a long line of something far greater than any one American could ever be on their own.

      A man is dead.

I’m sure his parents and relatives are in shock over his DEATH.

He served honorably, was involved in his community, and now he is dead.

My heart goes out to this family, particularly because I myself don’t feel any need to jump up and down with triangles or flags or parades or any of that.

I’m just another veteran who put on the nameless and faceless uniform, served my country, and now live my life.

Should the LGBT community be outraged that yet another criminal preyed upon us? I think EVERYONE should be EXACTLY as outraged as EVERYONE would be had this been a str8 crime that started with an internet introduction.

Should the LGBT community be outraged that Goucher’s family isn’t waving any rainbow flags or such. RESOUNDING !NO!

Let the family grieve in their own way. If they want to take up the gay victim flag, that’s their choice, NOT OURS. As a veteran myself, I hope they choose to have him buried in the state veterans cemetery.

Aim your outrage at the criminal.

    • Life in prison would be a bargain for Freemore. If he nad second thoughts about what he and Goucher had done, he could have said, “I don’t feel right about what we did and I don’t want to see you again.” Avoid two wasted male lives, one dead and one in prison for life. However, now that the irretreivable was done, being a lifer with no hope of parole would give Freemore many years to reflect on what he did and why to snuff out another man who was of no threat to his existence.
Unfortunately, it’s too late for regrets. He had plenty of opportunity to not do what he did to Goucher, he had a chance to think, “this is crazy, this is so not worth it.” But now that it’s done that’s it. All the tears (if he has any in that mean, hard-hearted person of his) will not bring a life back, nor will the tears keep him from having to do the time for doing the crime.

This is a Hate Crime, no matter how one
looks at it. Therefore, Freemore should
be given the death penalty. However, life in prison; without parole, to ponder
his senseless act of inhumanity, if there
is still room in the inn.

    • hmmm…. it would be interesting to do sum research, to kno,if freemore’ here had any background in religious’ exteremist’ setting, probably not now in his’ adult life by his’ criminal’ record, but by his’ childhood,or otherwise, sumthing suggest, he was programmed,or educated to second guess,or judge, his’ very own nature’

    • Sorry that Michael Goucher’s family didn’t get out and boldly celebrate his
life and let the world know what a beautiful gift this young man was to them. Doesn’t sound like a proud family to me, proud of his service, his sacrifice.

My heart aches not for his family but for this senseless tragedy of Michael Goucher’s death while he was just trying live his own life and find some kind of joy in it.

    • As for Groucher’s uncle, before he spouts off my lame excuses like “If there’s a lesson to be taken from this tragedy, it’s to warn kids, especially the younger kids, about the danger of getting together with strangers they meet online”. Maybe he should campaign to make it easier for gay youth to meet in real life without the fear of being beaten or being stabbed in public!

    • I’m gay and have a son serving in Iraq.

Groucher joins the Army, willing to lay down his life for our country. He goes through pure training hell to be of sound mind and body so we can have our freedom.
He’s fortunate, instead of being deployed overseas he’s stationed stateside.
He’s murdered, stabbed 20 times because someone changed their mind?
He’s dishonored, his own family’s quote: “If there’s a lesson to be taken from this tragedy, it’s to warn kids, especially the younger kids, about the danger of getting together with strangers they meet online”.
If that’s their only statement, how sad to say such a thing instead of the pride they should have in such a loving, caring, honorable son.
If that’s the newspaper’s only quote used, it’s even sadder.
What a terrible loss of life. I’m not usually a proponent of the death penalty, but there is no justice in this world if he’s not given life, then some prisoners handle him with street justice.

    • Sure, let the criminals into the military – just not the Gay and Lesbian folks. Really tragic. It’s high time the military abandon the requirement for gays to LIE about themselves while serving their country.
