Gay Reversal Group Pushes “Ex-Gay” Literature

Chicago-based group, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX) is pushing public school libraries to insert a whole new class of books on their shelves about “reformed homosexuals.”

Fox News reported that books referring to “gay reversal” are banned, according to the national non-profit organization.

The website for PFOX says:

“Each year thousands of men, women and teens with unwanted same-sex attractions make the personal decision to leave homosexuality. However, there are those who refuse to respect that decision. Consequently, formerly gay persons are reviled simply because they dare to exist! Without PFOX, ex-gays would have no voice in a hostile environment.”

They have written books such as You Don’t Have to Be Gay and A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality.

The group told Fox News that libraries across the country refuse to carry these and other books that describe a person’s sexual orientation as something that can change from gay to straight.

PFOX allegedly contacted publicly funded universities nationwide that have LGBT centers. “Our offer to donate ex-gay books and brochures, we were rejected by all,” they said.

Fox News reports that people have suggested that these books promote homosexuality as a treatable condition.

PFOX claims however, they are not an anti-gay organization–
They are a “pro-ex-gay” organization.

This is one of the organization’s flyers.

    • When I was forced out to my mother, she tried to make me read a book on ex-gays, she wanted me to go get help from PFOX. I simply told her that I was gay and nothing could change my attraction to men. She then kicked me out of the house, and I had to live with a neighbor to graduate highschool. The people that are claiming to be ex-gay, are just a puppy doing tricks. Yes, he can do tricks but he still is just a dog.

    • When I came out to my parents, they used examples of organizations like PFOX to try and convince me to do ex-gay camp. There is a clear reason why gays are hostile to the whole idea of ex-gay therapy- the only goal it achieves is adding fuel to the fire of our already misinformed opposition. It brands those who have made the difficult transition to self acceptance as weak, and capitalizes on those suffering from public backlash. If they really cared about gays and ex-gays, they would fight to change parts of society that make people so determined to change their orientation in the first place.

    • as long as it is filed under FICTON we as a community should not have a problem with it. Freedom of speach and expression applies to everyone.

    • Odd. They’ve already been discredited for faking results on purpose so I fail to see how they exist at all.
I recall a doctor saying that these “ex-gays” are simple examples of undiagnosed bisexuality, that sexuality is dangerous to tamper with, and cannot be changed through simple therapy.

Its like a turd that wont flush.

    • If there’s a book on ex-ex-gays (surely there must be…) then does it also get its own section, right next to the ex-gay section?

    • I dunno, what happened to calling these folks closet cases? They obviously are not ex-gay.

On a lighter note, why do these christian nut jobs always have “bad christian hair”.

Its like all these christians have stock in a blowdryer company.

A guy at work, with that big blow dried hairdo is always trying to convert me (we call him sister christian, the radar is binging so loudly you have to turn it off…”we” is a bunch of straights by the way!). He recently loaned me a dvd on creation. It was funny..we laughed the whole time at the lies. Plus we played a game “pick out the christian”. Every time they had someone new to interview, the hair revealed which side of the debate he is on.

I know, its mean, but I don’t say it publicly except here where I hope people can see its a joke..even if bad taste.

I got rid of my christian hairdo in the 80’s!

    • PFEGG (A.K.A. PFOX) never has turned anyone straight. They just use guilt like a sword to get them to not act on their desires. Even this doesn’t work well. Two of their “leaders” a few years ago were busted numerous times in gay bars trying to pick someone up for the night.

Their garbage doesn’t belong at schools because it isn’t factual yet they promote it as fact but they can never produce the “10’s of Thousands” they claim to have converted, only the same 30 people over and over again.

    • I presume these books will be placed in the “Fiction” shelves of the libraries.

    • Why are these people so invested in other peoples’ lives? They’re utterly threatened by people who aren’t exactly alike. That’s a clinical disorder, not a difference of opinion.

    • when will these people learn most people learn about taboo subjects on the internet. Just promote your hatred and self loathing on a website! Those that want it will find it.

    • This is so ridiculous…reading these Ex-Gay books are just going to cause more harm and stigma for everyone. People who don’t want to be anymore make me feel sad them…I mean one thing is trying to change who you are for the better…it’s another thing entirely to try and change just to feel ‘normal’ and accepted by close minded society…it’s just going to backlash and cause denial, depression, possibly suicide. Embrace who you are, and love yourself…simple.

    • If I ever see them I will take each and every single one and dispose of them in the trash.

    • one way to not have a gay child, Don’t procreate!

  • GayIthacan Said: October 23rd, 2009 at 1:39 pm
    • Most of us refer to people who can go either way at different times in their lives as ‘bisexual’.

I guess the memo did not reach these dimwits.

  • David Nguyễn Tạ Said: October 23rd, 2009 at 1:29 pm
    • That’s stupid.

      Pro-ex-gay = anti-gay

      Dumb framing techniques.
