Gay quote from Obama’s State of the Union

, editor in chief, 365gay.com

I’m watching this right now on CNN, but TPM has already released the full text of Obama’s State of the Union.

Below is the quote where he promises to work to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell this year – after celebrating the passing of the Employment Anti-Discrimination Act.

Interesting that he tucked it in the civil rights paragraph instead of the long section on military effectiveness and national security – which would have made a stronger argument to the American people.

Obama:

Abroad, America’s greatest source of strength has always been our ideals. The same is true at home. We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal, that no matter who you are or what you look like, if you abide by the law you should be protected by it; that if you adhere to our common values you should be treated no different than anyone else.

We must continually renew this promise. My Administration has a Civil Rights Division that is once again prosecuting civil rights violations and employment discrimination. We finally strengthened our laws to protect against crimes driven by hate. This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are. We are going to crack down on violations of equal pay laws – so that women get equal pay for an equal day’s work. And we should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system – to secure our borders, enforce our laws, and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nations.

    • Nice step in the right direction. We shall see.

    • Ugh, why did you use a big Pink fighter jet as the main picture? That’s not helping battle the opposition that Gays in the military are the same and just as loyal as the Straight men and women in our Armed Forces. -_-’ Besides that, I was surprised too that he put it this in the civil rights paragraph instead of the military one, but it makes me happy knowing our President wants to help the Gay Rights movement.Fingers crossed DADT ends by August as well as getting our troops out of Iraq at the same time!

    • Pleased to hear President Obama advocate the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Well, I’ve heard enough talk…how about some positive action for our GLBT service members?

    • I didn’t find even a passing reference to ENDA, either in the quote above or in the text of Obama’s address. He also didn’t mention DOMA. It’s great if he gets DADT repealed, but is that all he’s going to do?

    • Hopeful but I’ll believe it when I see it.

    • A civil rights division that is finally prosecuting civil rights violations. I imagine so.New hate crime laws mandated that. The civil rights violation line is growing and has to be addressed sooner rather than later.

    • im very hopeful for the repeal. although i do believe he should have mentioned DOMA i also believe you have to take one step at a time and in a time of war, we need more troops and repealing DADT seems to be an easier step to take then DOMA. i am hoping that DOMA will eventually be repealed but that repeal is going to be a harder battle to fight then that of DADT. it will be a nice change to finally not have to hide my relationship with my fiance (who is in the military) whenever we’re together.

    • Before you all start jumping for joy, think about what is going to happen. Obama said he was going to urge congress to repeal DADT. There will not be enough votes to get it passed and then he will say “I trid to make it happen but congress blocked it”. This is just a ploy to win back the gay vote since he has lost so many independent voters. He need us and once again holding out hope to us only to once again disappoint us. Dems have had a super majority for a year and could have passed anything they wanted. They can’t even be united enough to pass a healthcare bill much less repeal DADT. Sorry but all my votes will be for republicans in the future. At least they are honest that they hate us and are not going to do anything on our behalf.

    • If legislation is drafted and voted down, who will be to blame?

The President or those who vote nay?

I’m not jumping up and down but I remain optimistic and hopeful with a healthy dose of realistic skepticism

    • Why do we want this repealed? To encourage more of our wonderful young gay and lesbian youth to go over there and get maimed, raped and killed?

  • gaystudent Said: January 27th, 2010 at 11:31 pm
    • Meh. ONE sentence about it.
Not that I don’t trust this, I do, but there are a lot of other important issues facing the gay community.

Cindy McCain takes a stand and poses for the Noh8campaign and all Obama can do is say that we should be able to serve in the military.
      :/

    • Seems to me our community is good enough to be again, maimed, raped and killed but not good enough to share a loving LEGAL marriage.

    • Did you see the expression (or lack) on the joint chiefs of staff? Didn’t appear that they were especially enthusiastic about his statement on DADT.
