Gay politicians criticize Obama administration’s supporting of DOMA
06.18.2009 1:10pm EDT
(Washington) Several gay politicians have released statements this week criticizing the Obama administration’s support of the Defense of Marriage Act. Congressman Barney Frank was among those who disagreed with the Justice Department’s actions, calling it a “big mistake” and asking the president to explain his stance on the issue.
“I think the administration made a big mistake. The wording they used was inappropriate,” the Massachusetts Democrat told the Boston Herald during an interview published in the paper’s Wednesday edition.Jared Polis, another gay member of Congress, released a statement on his website explaining his shock and hurt after the Justice Department compared same-sex marriage to incest.
“I was shocked and disappointed to learn that President Obama chose to defend DOMA in federal court, especially given his campaign promise to call for a full repeal of DOMA. My sadness turned to outrage when I read the Justice Department’s brief that not only defended this hurtful law but seemed to embrace it,” said Rep. Polis. “Comparing my loving relationship with my partner, Marlon, to incest was unconscionable coming from a president who has called for change.”

MoonHater,
All closet cases? Your talking to someone who went to a college republican meeting holding hands with his boyfriend and told everyone that I am gay and that the Repubs need to expell all the religious nutjobs and get back to “Keep the govt. out of my wallet, pants, and heart”.
I was shocked when I found that almost everyone there agreed with me.
People like Jindal are idiots who would be better off in the Constitution party with other fundie asstards. Newsflash to you, too: NOT EVERY DEM. SUPPORTS GAY MARRIAGE.
Take a look at some quotes from Republicans about NH Marriage Equality:
“As happy as I was over the victory of gay marriage yesterday, I was deeply saddened that only 13 Republicans were on board for the first vote and then only 12 for the second vote (and only five for the vital bill of granting equal rights to transgendered folks). I am ashamed of the Republican Party; I am especially ashamed of Republicans who claim to be libertarians who could not bring themselves to vote for this bill.“
“We must end all discrimination, and we must do it now. There’s never been a better time.”
Great job bashing people in your own community. keep on sticking up for Obummer as he drains you of your money and becomes Bill Clinton 2.0. I’ll stick with a party that lets me keep my cash and is actually honest about what they do.
Moronhater, we could propose that you are simply someone from the DNC spreading your excuses.
Obama would not know a gay hoop (to jump through) if it were wrapped up and delivered to him at his favorite burger joint.
Face the facts, Obama has done nothing for those in the gay community. A community that supported him at a reported 70-75%.
I’m kinda anxious to see what those percentages shift to after seeing the DNC and the Obama’s indifference to equality for all.
Bob Sees,
It would be a coooooold day in hell before i support the closet case “log cabin republicans”
You people are insane if because Obama hasn’t “jumped through hoops” yet for us that I or we should suddenly support the Republican Nazi Christian Right Taliban…
Have you forgotten Bush just few years ago saying “most important thing in the country is to protect the sanctity of marriage, that is why we need a constitutional ammendment to call marriage between one man an one woman.” **This is what you will get if you have Republicans and the Christian Taliban in power again.
You better do your research on people Like Gov. Bobby Jindal, David Vitter, Steve Scalise and others before suggesting that LGBT support the Republican party. I mean really.
Some of you act like you want Obama to fail, probably Rush Limbaugh followers here to spread your hate and ignorance.
Call me an idiot but if the trend continues, with people like Dick Cheney and Megan McCain, in a few years we will be getting the most support from the Repubs. No this isn’t sarcasm. Hopefully they will have their schism, kick out the American Taliban, and come out (pardon the pun) as being the party of small government and “Get out of our business & lives” like they are supposed to be.
Seriously, if we start supporting the Log Cabins (Who arent “closeted”, By the effin Way, someone CAN be gay and believe in small govt. and lower taxes) we will probably see much more support from BOTH sides, because they’ll notice our power. This is our ONLY choice, becuase at this point, we can only depend on ourselves to defend our own civil rights.
Congressmen Frank, I want and need an apology from the author of the brief!
With all due respect, Congressman Barney Frank, I want an apology… only then will I not change my party status from Dem. to Indepdent. I HAVE HAD IT!
When President Obama was elected I was filled with joy and happy anticipation. It would seem that I was to much of an optimist. To say that I am disappointed would be a huge understatement. We, the LGBT Community, came and helped in every way we could to get him elected and this is the thanks we get. I am angry! I feel betrayed!
It is totally horrific to read the comments in the CNN link above.
Why are we a minority? Well from dictionary.com:
mi⋅nor⋅i⋅ty /mɪˈnɔrɪti, -ˈnɒr, -maɪ-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [mi-nawr-i-tee, -nor, -mahy-] Show IPA noun, plural -ties, adjective
–noun 1. the smaller part or number; a number, part, or amount forming less than half of the whole.
2. a smaller party or group opposed to a majority, as in voting or other action.
3. a group differing, esp. in race, religion, or ethnic background, from the majority of a population: legislation aimed at providing equal rights for minorities.
Yes, we equate or struggle to the civil rights movements that have preceeded us.
Yes, we ARE a minority. If we werent, then over half the world would be Gay.
“they just want the word marriage”;BULLSHIT!
No we dont. I could give a fuck less about that silly word. It’s the recognizing of our relationships in the form of Survivors benefits, health care, inheritance rights, and the other countless rights that we don’t have that you “married” people have and take advantage of to the fullest extent. Call it civil unions, call it gay marriage, call it SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICHESPIRALIDOSO…I don’t care, but give us the same rights and we’ll be happy and go away to live our lives without your hate.
OH, and most of the fools on that link do believe that we “choose” to be gay, and poepl of color are born that way, so how can we equate to their struggle?
INBREEDING HURTS PEOPLE!
GOD DAMMIT, ITS 2009….GET over it
For matters of practicality a committed couple should take some steps to ensure their well being such as life insurance, sharing real estate through a trust or as joint tenants with rights of survivorship if permitted in your state, obtaining a will and a living will. Open a joint checking and or savings account and have your partner listed on your CD’s and 401k as beneficiary. After 44 years of life in the U.S. and 26 years with my partner, I no longer believe that America is “going to come through” for us. I also no longer believe that America is what it likes to say that it is. We have to face reality at some point about these matters. As far as the President is concerned, he and the Vice President made it very clear during the campaign what their opinion was on these matters. What I found surprising was that media, including this web site, were ignoring the obvious and promoting this man as our Martin Luther King Jr. If marriage, aka, acceptance, every happens in the U.S. then count it as a bonus but protect yourself as best you can in the meantime and never forget those words spoken by Brian Kinney to Justin in an episode of Queer as Folk, there are two kinds of straight people, those who hate you to your face and those who hate you behind your back.
OBAMA is an Uncle Tom, Typical Washington. All the black voters sitting home waiting for the US to change and this is “there time” guess again, his ass wont do anything. he is afraid.
4 years of bullshit fowollowed by a ton more. Canada is looking better and better…
