Gay politicians criticize Obama administration’s supporting of DOMA

(Washington) Several gay politicians have released statements this week criticizing the Obama administration’s support of the Defense of Marriage Act. Congressman Barney Frank was among those who disagreed with the Justice Department’s actions, calling it a “big mistake” and asking the president to explain his stance on the issue.

“I think the administration made a big mistake. The wording they used was inappropriate,” the Massachusetts Democrat told the Boston Herald during an interview published in the paper’s Wednesday edition.

Jared Polis, another gay member of Congress, released a statement on his website explaining his shock and hurt after the Justice Department compared same-sex marriage to incest.

“I was shocked and disappointed to learn that President Obama chose to defend DOMA in federal court, especially given his campaign promise to call for a full repeal of DOMA. My sadness turned to outrage when I read the Justice Department’s brief that not only defended this hurtful law but seemed to embrace it,” said Rep. Polis. “Comparing my loving relationship with my partner, Marlon, to incest was unconscionable coming from a president who has called for change.”

    • Who would have guessed that our first African American president would be such a flagrant biggot?

He’s such an idoit! He has a very rare and special oppotunity to go down in history as a champion of civil rights. History could remember him as it remembers Abraham Lincon. Instead he is chosing a course of action that will cause history to remember him as it remembers George W. Bush. Such a waste of potential.

    • I think that they just pulled a Bush era plan to defend DOMA out of a drawer and used it instead of writing their own.

It was disgusting. I had an Obummer mousepad but it went out with yesterdays garbage.

    • I get it…he’s playing to the religious base, Rick Warren et al must be overjoyed. Its indicative of Obama’s “god is in the mix” first and foremost over equality issues. That’s not going to change, not the change we thought we would get. Just another four years of disappointment, pushed again under the bus. If at least DADT doesn’t get repealed by 2012…here’s one Green voter returning to his fold, at least the Greens are upfront about equality and mean what they say, no lies, no double-talk and NO MORE taking my vote or money for granted, those days are gone. I’d be more than surprised if responds to the DOJ decision, he doesn’t strike me as having any backbone, just a load of fancy talk with no action. He’d rather appease the haters than stand up to them and do the decent thing and that takes courage. He clearly has none.

    • Oh Barney Frank. Why are you the only democrat with any balls?

      I <3 Barney Frank.

    • I see why they are shutting down Logo News.

They are so far behind on the news its crazy.

Barney Frank did a 180 and agreed with the DOJ Brief.

Yes you heard it, Barney Frank is a traitor. He most likely got in trouble for going against the flip flopping president

    • SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. What part of that is so difficult to understand? Yes, I know, the Christian Taliban doesn’t understand, or doesn’t want to understand, the concept. Like the Islamic Republic of Iran, they would like the US to become the Christain Republic of The US. (With Pat Robertson as the Supreme Religious Leeder).

    • Hmmm, from the guy who brought you the “reverend” Donnie McClurkin and the “reverend” Rick Warren, the guy who made no worthwhile public statement about Prop 8 before its vote and who had nothing to say about the CA Supreme Coutr decision about it, who has done precious little beyond his usual rhetoric in the way of any real and worthwhile action, who expects us to salivate because some guy in the personnel department thinks we should be happy… this President is rapidly becoming a sad joke.

    • Newsflash — Barney Frank more recently said that he supports the DOMA brief, because he hadn’t read it himself when he made his earlier complaint about it. What a loser.

  • Annie Said: June 18th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
    • And now apparently the Senate is going to formally apologize for slavery and segregation. Just not all segregation, since they and Obama are too cowardly to repeal DOMA and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. They said this one is designed to come out on Juneteenth. Okay, that is very good. Now how about a repeal of DOMA and DADT on the anniversary of Stonewall?

  • Tim Said: June 18th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
    • Barney Frank did a flip flop and now says he agrees with the DOJ briefing not having read through it all. He is sucking up to the Obama and the DNC. Obama and the DNC must be punished and made to change course. I say, NO Money, NO Support, and NO Votes for the Dems until they pass our legislation and or apologize for their behavior. As for Frank he has shown he is a Democrat first and values that ahead of our community’s interests.

    • Well I’ve questioned Barney Franks judgement, the past decade. I don’t think he is a good government employee. I also don’t care for Joe Solmonese. I saw him on MSNBC the other night, and he was kissing DNC and Obama’s ass. I don’t like him, because he just seems like he’s in it to make mega bucks. I’m glad that I never sent money to the HRC. I will not ever send a dime to the HRC, or the DNC, and I won’t support Obama anymore, with his memorandums and lies.

  • Roger Said: June 18th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
    • Well, you Obummer supporters now have that “change” we heard about. Then, we have the Republican rightist who preached on “morality” advising it really didn’t apply to him. The Human Rights Campaign is its usual flurry of inactivity. Any contributions to HRC or DNC are obviously a big waste. SEnd the checks to the REd Cross or the food bank—I just did and those groups need it desperately and actually DO something.

    • At the rate this country is going, IRAQ will recognize full GLBT equality before we do!

  • John Said: June 18th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
    • OBummer got his equality, now he can say to hell with Gays.

  • Rick Said: June 18th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
    • Wow, read the blog on CNN where this original article came from…so much hate, biggotry, and ignorance. I like the one who says that being gay was a decision I made in my life so this movement can’t be considered like the black civil rights movement. I think I made the decision to be gay right about the time I made the decision to be right handed. I woke up one morning when I was 10 and said, “I think I will be right handed…and gay today!” Ignorance at its best.
