Gay men attacked on Ore. beach

(Seaside, Oregon) Police are searching for at least three men who attacked two gay men on the beach in Seaside, Oregon. Both victims were left unconscious by the beatings.

The names of the two victims are being withheld, but police told KPTV that both men are from Washington state.

The two men were on the beach near downtown Seaside around 3 a.m. with a group of people around a beach fire.  When the two got up to walk to the water, they were assaulted.

When the men regained consciousness, their attackers were gone.  The pair helped each other to a nearby hotel and then transported to hospital.

Police told the station they are treating the attack as a hate crime and are appealing for witnesses – particularly the other people who were with the men prior to the beating.

Local residents told KPTV that Seaside is not known as unfriendly toward gays.

“It’s a small town. Only time it gets crazy is when there’s a lot of tourists and people in town,” Evan White told the station.

    • Every citizen is entitled to use self defense. I can not wait to hear the story of the bullies who end up getting what they wanted to dish out.

    • I think every gay person should either get a permit to carry a weapon, or mace, maybe take a martial arts course, and when attacked, take the bastards down.

    • Hailing from the Pac. Northwest originally, my partner and I have always loved the Oregon coast and have made many trips to Seaside and Cannon Beach. We live openly and have never experienced even the slightest uncomfort from the people living there, not even so much as the “look” of disapproval we’ve experienced elsewhere, so for those bagging on Oregon, while this crime is tragic indeed, you have to look at the whole picture…they are treating this as a hate crime which is far better than much of the rest of the US….it is a good reminder that hate is everywhere, even in places that are typically very gay friendly.

    • Ken, I’m curious where that come from? Is there a post or comment at 365 that I haven’t seen?

If not, then why bring it up?

    • Stories like this make me realise how lucky I am not to live in the US. While always trumpeting how great their nation is, American society seems to be one of the most backward in the civilised world. Look at the issue of gay marriage/civil unions/equal rights. Most civilised nations have settled this and moved on. But in the US this issue and the hatred surrounding it are bewildering. Look to the north, guys. Canada has had gay marriages for a good many years now. Has that country collapsed? Be realistic. Amercia seems to me, as an outside observer, to be a country where everyone hates everyone else. All this hatred can only result in the imploding of this “great” nation. But are you surprised? It is the only country in the western world which still practises barbaric capital punishment, for christ sakes! Instead of always shouting how great you are, take some time to look at how bad you are. Or maybe this is just symptomatic of a nation in denial and is used to distract people from the real issues.

    • I’ve been to Seaside a few times, I’m a lil’ surprised this happened there.

This is a sad reminder of the hate still in this country.

Also, here is the video from a news channel:

In a world where people think it’s OK to beat or kill someone just because of their sexual orientation, real or perceived, I too think that we gays should take appropriate steps to protect ourselves and those we love from harm.

This includes taking self defense classes. Including those that involve concealed weapons, like hand guns.

One properly trained gay person with a gun can easily protect himself from a group of thugs. Most sane people fear death, including gay bashers.

    • We recently had a hate crime here. It wasn’t picked up by national media. It was a blip on tv news on one station days after it happened. There wasn’t any coverage until we staged a protest, and even then it was minimal.

    • Oregon is pictured as gay friendly, not so much. The press, police, and populist would rather ignor us.

    • I am amazed at the number of LGBT’s that remain opposed to conceal carry. There is NO reason to put up with violence like this and YES, fight fire with bigger fire!

    • I saw this last night on my local news (Seattle). It is shocking and very sad. Oregon and the Pacific NW as a whole is a pretty open and safe place to live. I love Seaside and the Oregon Coast. I guess it is just a reminder that there are ignorant jerks everywhere and we still have a long way to go. I am hopeful that the police will find these three and put them away for a long time.

    • And what do we do about this? Nothing! What news channels will this be on, other than in Oregon? None. This information needs to be public throughout the Nation. People need to see the reality of what is going on in this country.
