Gay marriage supporters picket Clinton speech

(San Diego, California) More than 200 opponents of Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in California, demonstrated in front of a San Diego hotel during a speech by former President Bill Clinton.

LGBT rights activists have been urging a boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt over its owner, Douglas Manchester’s contribution of $125,000 to the Proposition 8 campaign.

Rights groups, San Diego City Councilman Todd Gloria, labor leader Lorena Gonzalez and six others sent Clinton a letter, urging him to cancel his appearance at the annual convention of the International Franchise Association on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the former President said prior to the demonstration that  Clinton planned to honor his commitment to give the speech.

Several groups have canceled conventions at the hotel – costing Manchester’s facility an estimated $2 million.

Among those who bailed out of meeting at the hotel are conventions for the International Foundation of Employee Benefits, the San Diego Board of Realtors, the American Assn. of Law Schools and the California Nurses Association.

The California State Bar Association is under pressure to cancel its annual convention at the hotel.

Clinton has a mixed record on LGBT issues.  He signed the federal Defense of Marriage Act which bars the US government from recognizing same-sex couples, saying at the time he saw it as a way of stopped a proposed amendment to the US Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

Clinton also signed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which bans gays from serving openly in the military.  He said that the bill was a compromise to an all-out ban on gays that would result in a witch hunt of homosexuals in the armed forces.

Protesters marched in front of the hotel shouting for equality.  About a dozen San Diego police officers were on the scene, but reported no incidents.

The California Supreme Court will hear arguments next month that the vote for Prop 8 was unconstitutional.

    • I would love to buy the hotel, give Manchester his marching orders to never come back, strip the Manchester name from its front and advertize it in say Purple Roofs.com as friendly to GLBT family with kids and straight family with kids friendly and friendly to all, not just to yes on Prop H8 supporters as it currently stands, a horrible blight on the city of San Diego. And I would bring in all kinds of conventions that are gay and straight family friendly, things like the gay life and wedding expo, a home and garden expo, expo for highly technically skilled arts and crafts of all kinds, something to display the latest portable gadgets we can’t do without, something devoted to the fiber arts (I am a knitter and the on the way to being a weaver as well and much more.

I can dream about this even though I am not that rich, but those are great ideas for a bright new future should a gay guy or gal with very, very deep pockets be able to make an offer too good for Manchester to refuse and send him and his Prop H8 packing and to start to cleanse the hotel of his presence.

    • Is there a good reason that you use the term “gay marriage” rather than “marriage equality”? My spouse and I were legally MARRIED in California, not “gay married.” Equality is equality, and those who oppose us like to use the term “gay marriage” (quotes included).

    • Good News! This guy has lost over $2Million in conventions thus far! Keep up the good work San Diegans, and don’t lose heart just because Bill Clinton, a guy with an ego larger than Larry Craig’s stance, wouldn’t back down to pressure, no matter who it came from. Remember, Bill Clinton never backs down from a fight. This is how any president is, democrat, republican, whoever. It comes with the job description.
