Thanks, Raymond H. Clark for posting the link to the Washington Post. I posted a scathing comment as my alter-ego, obtusegoose ;-)

I am so f*cking tired of reading, "Black people didn't choose to be black. Gay people choose to be gay." They don't know a single gay person, yet they spew this lie over and over again. I'm not going to tolerate it anymore.

The perpetually uninformed want gays to be first class taxpayers, but second class citizens.
It is so hypocritical of the religious right , when attempting to keep their names hidden , in anti-gay petitions in Washington, while in Oklahoma , the state legislature is passing a law that will make the names of thos who have sought, or have had; an abortion ; available online.

Where to begin..first I have owned dogs and cats, male, female, mixed or same sex, they all do them same. They lick each other and sleep together, play together, guess the one that made the comment has never owned an animal.YES! I want to influence the children..remind them of what everybody else has forgotten..marriage/relationships,friendship is based on love(supposed to be)and sorry to all the hypocrites using the bible to hide behind..not once does God say love of any kind is wrong, only lust. These same people deciding our rights..mixing church and state, deciding what is moral?Until they have the courage and honesty to be truthful and real to put their wrongs on the table, unless they have never lied, cheated,or stole,or violated any of the 10 commandments, they have no right to judge us.Let's see if we can have one year and not hear of any scandals coming out of politics or the church...no more ripping off tax payers. If they can't achieve this, pass the bill..same sex marriage will be legal in all 50 states.Actually by religion "judge Ye not less Ye be judged" This burns me up as well..the Bible is only used to try to give them victory..have the balls to use it all..follow it correctly..if they did they would not have anything to hide behind.I want to marry from love,I don't care about a $266 death benefit,or any of that.It is up to us to plan our future, rely on the government for this/HELLO? have we not learned anything?I just want my marriage to be equal to any other. Is that really too much?

If they pass this marriage equality legislation, Washington DC could actually have a population increase for once!

For all those saying that gay marriage is going to destroy our society, do they have any evidence of societies allowing gay marriage that later were destroyed because of it? And no, Sodom and Gomorrah don't count because their existence has never been actually proven!

Since everyone's jumping on the gay dog quote (which is a logical fallacy of the false analogy), here's my interpretation of it: If my male dog (which doesn't exist, I have my kitty) lies with another male dog, then what does it matter? Oh wait, that's just the atheist coming out in me!

Read and comment on the Washington Post article here:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dc/2009/10/another_vote_for_same-sex_marr.html

See the video of the hearing and read more of Ms Copeland's comments here:

http://www.metroweekly.com/gauge/last_word/

My comments to the Post:

The first step in dehumanizing a group of people in preparation for committing genocide is to objectify them and strip them of their identity as an individual.I would like to inform Ms Ernestine Copeland that I am not a male dog; I do not mate with other male dogs. I am an Anglican Christian gay man; I MAKE LOVE with my (now) legally married HUSBAND, lover and friend of thirty-three years. I guess she doesn't remember when HER people were considered three-fifths human, or when HER people went to jail for marrying outside their race. Why is it that when any minority starts to make progress, they seemingly have to find another minority to oppress?

Here is our task/burden: every time some nut job equates us with dogs (or worse) we need to be there to refute them. It takes a lot of bravery to stand up, but once you're there it can feel pretty good! Get as many friends together as you can - gay, straight, whatever - stand up, speak your piece, and then go to Olive Garden afterward! (Or have a pizza, or cocktails, just do something fun...) I knew I had an awesome friend when my gal pal and I walked up to the NH Statehouse surrounded by the nastiest homophobes you can imagine and we went in anyway. Actually she helped me find the gays by figuring out that our contingent had already gone in - all the while I was just standing there in the courtyard going: "Oh, God, we are SO doomed!"

Your sincere input will make the opposition look as bad as they deserve to look and it will empower our friends & allies who, like me and you, are there looking for friendly faces in the crowd! We will win when we don't give up - we need to shout down the homophobes. They've been shouting my whole life and they need to zip it. Now. They'll only can it when confronted with numbers - we need everybody!

And if you're closeted, but concerned, how's this - go to a rally. Marriage equality is heading your way no matter where you are (or how long it takes). Choose a gathering an hour, or two, or three, from home. Bodies count and no one will identify you in a distant town - could be a great way to wade in, meet some great caring people (it will be a relief, trust me), and help out the cause without going too far outside your comfort zone! Just a thought...
