Gay marriage, partnership battles heat up in the Washingtons

, Keen News Service

Same-sex marriage battles heated up across the country Monday, as voting nears in Washington State and tensions escalated in Washington, D.C., with opponents evoking “Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Rick Rosendall, a spokesperson for the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, was among the first to speak at the hearing in Washington, D.C. He told the D.C. Council that opponents of same-sex marriage “describe marriage equality activists as both a small minority and a Goliath that needs a David to slay us.”

“Bishop [Harry] Jackson,” a leading opponent of same-sex marriage in D.C., “talks as if gay people just arrived here from another planet,” said Rosendall. “In fact, our roots in this city run deep. We have helped build our communities, and we will defend them from the ministers of fear and intolerance.” That was around the start of the hearing, at 3:30.

Nearly 100 witnesses and more than seven hours later, Ernestine Copeland, an opponent of same-sex marriage, ended the first day of the hearing at 10:58, asking, “Who among you would allow your male dog to lie with a male dog?” She harangued the Council for deciding “to lead my people to hell” by supporting same-sex marriages which “will destroy our society.”

At the same time, the D.C. board of elections held its own hearing Monday — on whether to allow a proposed initiative to ban licensing of same-sex marriages in the city. According to the Washington Blade, a D.C. gay newspaper, about 100 people showed up for that hearing, most of them for the initiative. Earlier this year, the board rejected a ballot measure to overturn a new law that recognizes marriage licenses granted to same-sex couples by other states.

The same-sex marriage bill was sponsored by openly gay Councilmember David Catania, a former Republican, now Independent. It is co-sponsored by ten of the Council’s 14 members. The Council voted 12 to 1 in May to approve a law that gives legal recognition to marriage licenses obtained by same-sex couples in other jurisdictions.

Phil Mendelson, chairman of the D.C. Council’s Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary and a co-sponsor of the bill, said the committee would “hear from the remaining 169 witnesses” during the second day of the two-day hearing, Monday, Nov. 2.

In Washington State, polling data give pro-gay forces a slight edge going into Tuesday’s vote, where Referendum Measure 71 will ask voters whether to approve or reject a newly passed domestic partnership law.

Though it is a matter being put to voters, most of the media attention has been bogged down in various court skirmishes over whether public documents — such as petitions which called for the referendum — can be withheld from the public and whether contributions can be limited.

The U.S. Supreme Court weighed in briefly, voting 8 to 1 on October 20, to uphold a decision that blocks the release of the Referendum 71 petitions until a federal court can hold a trial on the issue. (Justice John Paul Stevens was the lone dissenter.)

The anti-gay group Protect Marriage Washington filed the original lawsuit, claiming the availability of the petitions publicly violated the First Amendment rights of the people who signed the petitions because the public disclosure chills their speech. In a separate federal lawsuit, the Family Policy Institute is challenging the state’s disclosure laws for contributions to the referendum campaign and limits on the size of those contributions.

    • Thanks, Raymond H. Clark for posting the link to the Washington Post. I posted a scathing comment as my alter-ego, obtusegoose ;-)

I am so f*cking tired of reading, “Black people didn’t choose to be black. Gay people choose to be gay.” They don’t know a single gay person, yet they spew this lie over and over again. I’m not going to tolerate it anymore.

    • WTF!!!

Who the F**K is this guy calling a dog!?

      We are HUMAN BEINGS!!!

Endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights!

LIFE! LIBERTY! THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!

      Dogs are NOT PEOPLE!!!

Sorry for so many caps, I’m just really, really angry and I’m totally fed up with these Bible thumpers wanting to get their religion into politics and affairs of the State!

    • The perpetually uninformed want gays to be first class taxpayers, but second class citizens.
It is so hypocritical of the religious right , when attempting to keep their names hidden , in anti-gay petitions in Washington, while in Oklahoma , the state legislature is passing a law that will make the names of thos who have sought, or have had; an abortion ; available online.

    • Where to begin..first I have owned dogs and cats, male, female, mixed or same sex, they all do them same. They lick each other and sleep together, play together, guess the one that made the comment has never owned an animal.YES! I want to influence the children..remind them of what everybody else has forgotten..marriage/relationships,friendship is based on love(supposed to be)and sorry to all the hypocrites using the bible to hide behind..not once does God say love of any kind is wrong, only lust. These same people deciding our rights..mixing church and state, deciding what is moral?Until they have the courage and honesty to be truthful and real to put their wrongs on the table, unless they have never lied, cheated,or stole,or violated any of the 10 commandments, they have no right to judge us.Let’s see if we can have one year and not hear of any scandals coming out of politics or the church…no more ripping off tax payers. If they can’t achieve this, pass the bill..same sex marriage will be legal in all 50 states.Actually by religion “judge Ye not less Ye be judged” This burns me up as well..the Bible is only used to try to give them victory..have the balls to use it all..follow it correctly..if they did they would not have anything to hide behind.I want to marry from love,I don’t care about a $266 death benefit,or any of that.It is up to us to plan our future, rely on the government for this/HELLO? have we not learned anything?I just want my marriage to be equal to any other. Is that really too much?

    • If they pass this marriage equality legislation, Washington DC could actually have a population increase for once!

For all those saying that gay marriage is going to destroy our society, do they have any evidence of societies allowing gay marriage that later were destroyed because of it? And no, Sodom and Gomorrah don’t count because their existence has never been actually proven!

Since everyone’s jumping on the gay dog quote (which is a logical fallacy of the false analogy), here’s my interpretation of it: If my male dog (which doesn’t exist, I have my kitty) lies with another male dog, then what does it matter? Oh wait, that’s just the atheist coming out in me!

See the video of the hearing and read more of Ms Copeland’s comments here:

      My comments to the Post:

The first step in dehumanizing a group of people in preparation for committing genocide is to objectify them and strip them of their identity as an individual.I would like to inform Ms Ernestine Copeland that I am not a male dog; I do not mate with other male dogs. I am an Anglican Christian gay man; I MAKE LOVE with my (now) legally married HUSBAND, lover and friend of thirty-three years. I guess she doesn’t remember when HER people were considered three-fifths human, or when HER people went to jail for marrying outside their race. Why is it that when any minority starts to make progress, they seemingly have to find another minority to oppress?

    • Here is our task/burden: every time some nut job equates us with dogs (or worse) we need to be there to refute them. It takes a lot of bravery to stand up, but once you’re there it can feel pretty good! Get as many friends together as you can – gay, straight, whatever – stand up, speak your piece, and then go to Olive Garden afterward! (Or have a pizza, or cocktails, just do something fun…) I knew I had an awesome friend when my gal pal and I walked up to the NH Statehouse surrounded by the nastiest homophobes you can imagine and we went in anyway. Actually she helped me find the gays by figuring out that our contingent had already gone in – all the while I was just standing there in the courtyard going: “Oh, God, we are SO doomed!”

Your sincere input will make the opposition look as bad as they deserve to look and it will empower our friends & allies who, like me and you, are there looking for friendly faces in the crowd! We will win when we don’t give up – we need to shout down the homophobes. They’ve been shouting my whole life and they need to zip it. Now. They’ll only can it when confronted with numbers – we need everybody!

And if you’re closeted, but concerned, how’s this – go to a rally. Marriage equality is heading your way no matter where you are (or how long it takes). Choose a gathering an hour, or two, or three, from home. Bodies count and no one will identify you in a distant town – could be a great way to wade in, meet some great caring people (it will be a relief, trust me), and help out the cause without going too far outside your comfort zone! Just a thought…

Earnestine, I’m not so uptight that I would concern myself over the sexual partner of my dog(other than making sure it’s been “fixed”). If the dog is happy, it neither picks my pocket nor destroys the world. Get a life you sanctimonious cow.

    • I think that the press really dose have to start pointing out the in washington state voting has been going on for about a week now as most county in the state are strictly vote by mail,(with polling places for voter with special needs that can not vote by mail) so there a lots of votes that have already be cast in this election and there will be still more by the time Nov3 comes around. (it was the same case in 08 with the presidential election a lot of the state had already voted by election night so it was more the sit back and wait game)

    • Ok, I am a human when it comes to doing my everyday things such as: laundry, paying bills, paying taxes, eating food, washing my hands and going to the bathroom. But now, I’m considered as equal to a dog?!?!?!?! I pray for both bills to fail in the voter’s outcome. I mean being compared to a damn dog??? There are some evil people who are voting these referendums as yes, who are very evil. Equal rights = equal taxes

So gay men are compared to male dogs? I then guess that women like her can be compared to a “bitch”?

And if these other groups want to “protect marriage” then why don’t they do their damnest to outlaw the divorce laws that they enjoy?
