Frankly:
I am surprised at your comment as I started late in life (40 something) going to see and participate in the Pride parades. I was always on a float and really saw nothing that you did not see in Mardi Gras. Yes there was one float that pushed the edge but other than that one its all been pretty tame as far as I am concerned. Since about 1992 I was always on a float done by Equality IL and we have handed out in the past mostly trinkets and one year we handed out Condoms. Oh yes and a few years we handed out pamphlets for political candidates.

The way they do the parade in Chicago, the politicians go first and the Equality IL float goes immediately in back of them. There are one or two floats that have extremely loud music and some guys dancing on them but all in all pretty tame considering Mardi Gras.

One year there was some controversy over super soakers (both from the floats and from the bystanders big deal nothing to be ashamed about so I am not sure (at least from a Chicago perspective) where anyone would be ashamed from a pride parade.

BTW our parade lasts for several hours starting around noon and going approximately 2.5 or 3 miles (it depends how you count). Every year we have had decent weather and in the 15 years I have been doing it we have had no rain (cross my finders). I cannot understand why you are ashamed. There (at least in Chicago) are lots of different floats and different types of people participating in the parade. If memory serves me right we also have a contingent of gay Chicago police that march in the parade. I think I can safely say that in all the years I have been participating in Pride parades we have never heard of any complaints from the politicians or the police or anyone that either participated or came out to watch the parade. except the one or two people who object to gay people and happen to live along the parade route as it does close the area down for at least 5 or 6 hours.
So why are you ashamed?

Finally a dictionary that defines the true definition of marriage. I bet the right wing is bashing this dictionary as we speak.

STEPHEN. Your post is the reason a lot of people think every middle aged white male is racist, which is truly not the case. What's wrong with the kid who does your lawn being proud? You need to also be proud of your accomplishments and your age.

Few times have I agreed with nearly every post I find on 365gay.

I, too, am a gay, white, male of nearly 60 years. And there is nothing wrong in having pride in each one of those unchangeable facts. But having pride in those facts does not mean (must not mean) that I cannot champion and cherish anyone else who has genuine pride in who they are.

You are a (enter your orientation), (enter the color of your skin), (enter your gender) of nearly (enter your age at your next birthday). How ever that sentence ends up reading, you ought to be proud of every single element in the sentence.

Having pride in who one is does not mean that you have disdain for who someone else is. Indeed, if I hate someone else for who they are, I have no true pride, no rightful pride, no respect for who I am.

True pride is, by is very nature, inclusive. Self-centeredness - selfishness - is, by its very nature, exclusive and is most often produced by insecurity, fear and ignorance. The outworking of that is hatred.

The pride I have in myself allows - indeed encourages - and eagerly accepts the true pride others have in themselves. But there is the other side of that coin.

The pride we ought to have does not mean we are proud of every action of (insert orientation, race, gender and age). It means that if we, as individuals, are acting out of inclusiveness and acceptance, our pride is working itself outward from inside of our very beings.

The comments on this are amusing.

1. If the kid mowing your lawn has more pride than you, you are the one who needs to figure out why. I hope that kid continues to have pride in who he is. I hope everyone finds a way to take pride in themselves and what they do with their lives.

Question: Are the immigrant kid and the kid mowing your lawn the same person? That's not clear in your statement and I'm curious.

2. The pride marches may be overboard in some respects but I've seen representations of every facet of Gay men and women at them.

How the hell can we expect anyone to respect us as a community if we can't respect the differences inside our community.

3. Same sex marriage in the dictionary... Nice novelty item but not very significant in my opinion.

Jayzus, Stephen, you packed internalized homophobia, internalized agism, racism, classism, rankism, xenophobia, illegal immigrant paranoia and downright sourness in 5 lines about the dictionary changing the definition of marriage

I am tempted to say "impressive!" and "wtf?"

Please lighten up and examine your issues.

The marches aren't that bad.But sure some find it bad, because it doesn't directly show in apperance and stateing the message acoss a way some find direct. As to some say to also.Haveing fun w ith them is good.Is why some like them. Some will hate them for that.IMO some of them loos a point that is trying being made.Or have no point really and just a flauntive statement.Like many of those tackless nude strong men. That seem to draw in the straight women...........

Humm why not have a guy and girl be in a made costume showing the dictionary, by the compant stateing to the definition eh.

Incorrect: Only two states in the country legally recognize gay marriage: Connecticut and Massachusetts.

WRONG: New Mexico recognizes foreign same-sex marriages and New York (even though it doesn't perform them) legally recognizes same-sex marriages from abroad and domestically.

---There is a difference between "recognizing" and legally allowing these contractual arrangments to be performed in the state. Either way, they are legal in the states which recognize them.
