Gay marriage foes reach signature goal in Maine


(Maine) Gay marriage foes in Maine say they’ve collected enough signatures to stop a new law from going into effect and to force a statewide vote.

Mark Mutty from the Stand for Marriage Maine coalition said Wednesday it took four weeks to gather the more than 55,000 signatures necessary to put gay marriage to a vote.

The law allowing gay marriage was scheduled to take effect Sept. 12 but will be put on hold after the signatures are submitted and certified.

Six states allow gay marriage. Maine became the fifth to allow gay marriage in May, and New Hampshire followed suit.

    • I would like to look-up and find out who signed the petition. Then I will knock on their door and say to them – “hello, please justify and explain to me as to why two people of the same sex can not marry”? I bet 67 percent will slam the door and say fuck off you gay activist”. Well I do not want to resort to violence of any kind – but an eye for an eye justs makes the world blind.

      Maybe there was no enough support in the community for marriage equality in Maine, since only a recent poll in Maine said that only 44 percent said they support same gender marriage (the same as California – Oh yes thats right look what happened there for all to see!!!!!).

Here you are frothing and foaming at the mouth instead of putting all that wasted energy to use. If you feel that strongly, why don’t head up to Maine and help that beleaguered state fend off those Stand For Marriage Maine whackjobs. One look at your glaring eyes, lips curled back, teeth bared, foam flowing, they’d all run in fear and Maine would be safe again.

    • Recalling our own experience here in MA, where we underwent years of battling to retain our marriage equality and seventeen votes in the legislature, the best step at this point is to put every one of those signatures under a magnifying glass. The group in Maine who opposes marriage equality has allied themselves with the very self same people who committed election fraud here in MA. They lied to those who signed, they did bait and switch tactics, and used fraudulent signatures. I was involved in checking the signatures here when this process was tried in MA, and at least one third of all those I spoke with about their signatures had not actually signed at all, or never intended to sign such a thing.

    • As I understand it, any church can legally work on any political campaign in any way they want except for endorsing specific parties or candidates. The IRS doesn’t disallow petitions, or ballot initiative drives, etc. Yes, it sucks, but there it is.

    • Mark Mutty is also the Public Affairs Director for the Portland Catholic Church. I looked on the church’s website and they have this petition drive listed on their own site. I called my local IRS division and they said this is in violation of the tax exemption clause, that a person whose salary is paid by the church, can’t also work toward … Read Moreoverturning or for any legislation.       Amendment XIV

      “Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

      Section 2. Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the executive and judicial officers of a state, or the members of the legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such state, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such state.

      Section 3. No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

      Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any state shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

    • What is the wording on the ballot initiative, and how can it not be unconstitutional when the 14th amendment states “a vote by majority can not be used to take away core rights of a minority? How can they use equal rights to take away equal rights? Can they use the law to break the law? Comments please. What’s their loophole?

    • Since when do we vote on Civil Rights in America? What happened in Cali was a travesty and will hopefully be struck down.

      Perhaps we should start a counter-campaign to outlaw heterosexual marriage and make everyone get Civil Unions.
