I've lived in Maine most of my life, and while I know small towns here (like anywhere) can harbor lots of hate toward us scary gay folks, but the bigger cities (like Portland) are very gay-friendly. There are always people in every city that hate us, but the most outspoken are very pro-equality. And there will be opposition in every state when it comes to gay marriage, but I'm just excited that my state is finally working to fight for my rights. Now if only the military could jump in and repeal DADT I'd be a happy gal.

Please don't spend your $$$$$ in Maine and, more important, please don't spend your money in homophobic Hawaii. This place is the bigot center of the Pacific. You wouldn't believe the hate at a recent hearing on a civil rights bill. It went on until 3 o'clock in the morning and gay people in the audiance were sick to their stomach from all the hate.

It's interesting that New England is leading the way on marriage. You hear so much (or did, when banks loaned money) about how the US is shifting to the south and west, and how those places will determine the future shape of the country, yet it's some of our oldest states having the least problem with gay marriage.

Who stages a rally against marriage? Who wants laws blocking loving, responsible adults from adopting children who need a home? What kind of person would describe him/herself as god-fearing, yet they seek to use Man's laws to deny God's love?

Trust yer gut. When you hear this foolishness, ask yourself some obvious questions. Who's opposed to love? Who wants to tell me that love doesn't solve problems? Who wants to advocate for a "God" who would deny children a loving home? Mainers haven't usually been known for material wealth, but they do have a tradition of being able to think for themselves.

These people, despite what they say, are haters of gays, but so thoroughly brainwashed by their desire for power and money and control that "God forgive them for they know not what they do" is appropriate.

Of course, that could have been said of the nazi's, and the only thing that solved that problem was trillions of pounds of explosive, etc. And 50 million deaths

That is what these people are- our own christian taliban. Whose religions always have to have someone to hate, be it in the past blacks, jews, and yes even catholics and Mormons (oh how they forget so fast).

Amazing how fucked up societies can be.

But I sense that Prop 8 is having a backlash amongst good christians who believe that morality, and values and fairness go hand in hand.

Not the "values", as he called them. that someone used in 1933, based on religious hatreds, that allowed him to gain total control of Germany. And we all know the results.

I'm really happy to hear that during these economically challenging times, that people can focus on really being douche bags. I wish we could still feed Christians to the lions.

The challenge is, and has always been, that obsessing over same-sex marriage allows these people to convince themselves that they care about "family values" without having to worry about their own dirty laundry. Things like dealing with the divorce rate would mean accepting problems within the straight community that they really don't want to face up to. It's much easier to scapegoat and pretend that a tiny minority like gays acts as a kind of societal voodoo doll casting a malefic influence over all other people.

However, their arguments as to why same-sex marriage would de-value the institution as a whole are extremely incoherent. Indeed, their childish, simplistic arguments for what constitutes a "real" marriage (opposite-sex couple, procreation) actually demonstrate why so many marriages fail. They naively believe that preserving the tradition of bride in a white dress and groom in a black tuxedo is what makes marriage work. They think that the presence of children holds marriages together.

Divorce statistics show otherwise, but as is common for conservatives they like very simple answers to every problem. Complexity upsets and confuses them. So the gays serve as a focus for distracting them from their own issues.

In states where same-sex marriage has been constitutionally banned nothing has changed for straight couples. Likewise, in states where it has been legalized nothing has changed for them either.

This is more along the lines of someone who buys a Mercedes arguing that nobody else on their street should be allowed to buy one because then their's wouldn't be "special" anymore.

I was born and raised in Maine. I spent the first 18 years of my LIFE in terror of the people in my very own neighborhood. They tormented me, abused me, degraded me, and anything else they saw fit to do to the gay kid in town.

They all called themselves Christians.

The day I truned 18, I left the state of Maine. Now, I am 40. I have never nor will I ever return to a state that is so blatantly and openly TORTUROUS to gay and lesbian youth.

I wonder why God placed the ugliest people (ugly inside is what I refer to) in one of our most beuatiful states.

Anyhow, this is one gay that will never return to the state of Maine.

Unless it is to accept the state's apology for 18 years of mistreatment and abuse.
