Gay marriage bill up for vote in NJ next week
12.04.2009 8:41am EST
(Trenton, NJ) A bill to legalize gay marriage in New Jersey will be posted for a vote next week.
Sen. Ray Lesniak, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, says the bill is scheduled to go before that committee on Monday and will be voted on by the full Senate next Thursday.Garden State lawmakers who support the idea have been reluctant to post the bill for a vote unless they were fairly certain it would pass. Both houses of the Legislature must pass it before it goes to the governor.
Outgoing Gov. Jon Corzine has said he would sign a gay-marriage bill into law. His replacement, Gov.-elect Chris Christie, takes office next month and says he would veto it.
New Jersey currently has a civil unions law.

If the democrats provide marriage equality, it will restore my faith in the Democratic Party in New Jersey.
If they do not, next time at the polls will be different for me, my friends, my family and my associates. You just don’t make a promise to gay families and then back out. It would be disaster for the Democratic Party. They will lose the base. There is no political risk other than to NOT do it. Anti-gay Catholics do not vote for democrats anyway!
Why bother? We know its going to get voted down because they’re more scared of the religious majority voting them out of office. Seeing this is just setting us up for more hurt feelings and bitter resentment for the places that pull this BS.
I’ve faced facts: This country values nothing. The people are selfish, lying, hollow, and believe anything no matter HOW much proof of the contrary you throw at them. You cant “reason” with that.
Join me as I sit back and laugh at every single bad thing that happens in this country. Tea and crumpets anyone?
I’m sorry but I refuse to even watch this.
After spazzing out yesterday over New York, I’ve kind of had my fill of this.
Besides, I’m sure everyone on 365 is tired of me screaming like a lunatic.
And I’m tired of it, just tired.
Tired of losing.
Tired of trying to justify my value as a human being to a group of people who will never view us as their equals.
Tired of trying to justify that we deserve the same as they do.
Why should we?
Why the hell should we have to beg and plead just to be treated equal?
It’s bull and everyone knows it.
As for Jersey….
If it passes wonderful.
If it doesn’t?
Meh.
Tired.
Not of fighting.
No way can we let these bozos ever win.
Just tired of Amerikkka’s ignorance.
I’m sure the Democrats of New Jersey are just as cowardly and cringing as those in neighboring New York – their only distinction being that they are probably a tad sleazier politically.
Don;t hold your breath, folks. Our ‘friends’ have shown us in NY just how untrustworthy and fleeting they are – always placing personal interest over what is right and moral for all.
You might as well vote Libertarian or Green next time around, since having a {D} in the seat is no better than having an {R}.
Oh, jeesh!! Buck the heck up! Yes it’s annoying, but it’s the way of the world. It’s a long battle and there are going to be some bitter defeats. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stay engaged.
James
yeah yeah yeah, whatever.
Gays, their friends, associates and families have been such loyal democrats, that their needs have been taken for granted by the party.
But that is all going to change when it is clear that even when democrats control both the assembly, senate, and governorship, they can’t deliver ONE SIMPLE VOTE ON EQUALITY AS PROMISED.
the NJ democrats are going to get the shock of their lives when the base stays home in the upcoming elections. AND FOR WHAT!!! Conservatives opposed to gay marriage would NEVER IN TEN TRILLION YEARS EVER EVER CONSIDER VOTING FOR A DEMOCRAT anyway!!! ?#$%^
I predict frequent gay rights rallies in NJ after Christie is sitting in the governor’s office and starts talking all kinds of antigay rights stuff.
What do the gay New Jersey folks here on 365gay.com have to say about that?
Holding my breath on this one. My gut feeling is as a New Yorker that this will go the same way as New York, but I hope I’m wrong. If it does, then gay New Jerseyans will have to try as best they can to make sure the the state doesn’t get one more penny spent by us as we can possibly manage by travelling to Connecticut to get married and shop until we drop for those of us capable of doing it. Depriving the state economies of much needed financial oxygen is another weapon in our limited arsenal to fight back the bigotry and hate in the democratic party. In New York State alone, former city comptroller William Thompson said that the state could gain as much as $207 million in revenue if the state legalized same-sex marriage. Now all of that is going to Connectict and elsewhere. Absolutely dumb but if we have to do it, lets go for it. Money talks after all.
Good Luck NJ, I hope it works out better for you than it did in NY.
Well if New Jersey passes the gay marriage bill, then New York has its pressures to pass the gay marriage bill. A lot of gay New Yorkers gonna cross over the bridge to Jersey to get married.
No more Mr. Nice Gay.
I got a mailing last week from Obama asking for money. I said “NO CHANGE, NO MONEY.
I donated $200 and countless hours of time registering people to vote for Obama because of his promises of change, especially promises to the gay and lesbian community. I will not donate to or take other actions in support of Obama until he delivers of his promises to REPEAL DOMA and DADT and pass ENDA.
Stop defending DOMA in court. Read the unanimous Iowa Supreme Court decision re: same-sex marriage where they articulate the difference between CIVIL marriage and RELIGIOUS marriage.
I promise to donate again WHEN Obama keeps his promises on these issues. Democrats may not have their majorities in Congress after the 2010 elections, so these issues must be handles NOW. The “fierce urgency of now” requires action by a “fierce advocate.”
What would Harvey do?

and join the fight.
NY State is surrounded to the north by marriage equality country called Canada. To the east by marriage equality states of Vermont, Massachusetts and Connnecticut. Hopefully to the southeast by New Jersey. What more does NY need to persuade it with so many parts of its border sharing state and international borders and lines with a marriage equality nation and marriage equality states?
The LGBT community in New Jersey must start pushing for equal rights this weekend. I hope they don’t end up like New York.
Fight for equality. Do not give up. Make it clear that while respect for civil unions is a step in the right direction, it is not good enough. Separate but equal is just not equal and never good enough.
