Gay activists rally outside Mormon temple in NYC

(New York) Carrying signs reading “Love not H8″ and “Did you cast a ballot or a stone?”, a large crowd of gay-marriage supporters gathered outside a Mormon temple to protest the church’s endorsement of a same-sex marriage ban in California.
The rally Wednesday night outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple came hours after gay couples exchanged vows for the first time in Connecticut amid cheers and tears of joy.The milestone did not ease the sting of a major loss for gay-marriage supporters last week. Gay activists planned protests across the country over the vote that took away their right to wed in California.
In the Upper West Side of Manhattan, demonstrators chanted “Shame on you!” outside the temple. Leaders of the Mormon church had encouraged members to support passage of California’s Proposition 8, a referendum banning same-sex marriage.
“I’m fed up and disgusted with religious institutions taking political stances and calling them moral when it’s nothing but politics,” said Dennis Williams, 36. “Meanwhile they enjoy tax-free status while trying to deny me rights that should be mine at the state and federal level.”
Church spokesman Michael Otterson said that while citizens have the right to protest, he was “puzzled” and “disturbed” by the gathering since the majority of California’s voters had approved the amendment.
“This was a very broad-based coalition that defended traditional marriage in a free and democratic election,” Otterson said, referring to the numerous religious and social conservative groups that sponsored Proposition 8.
Organizers of the rally estimated at least 10,000 people participated. Police said they could not give a crowd estimate.
Gay-marriage advocates said they were planning nationwide demonstrations this weekend in more than 175 cities and outside the U.S. Capitol. A Seattle blogger was trying to organize simultaneous protests outside statehouses and city halls in every state Saturday.
Earlier in Connecticut, Jody Mock and Elizabeth Kerrigan emerged from Town Hall in West Hartford to the cheers of about 150 people and waved their marriage license high. The couple led the lawsuit that overturned the state law.
“We feel very fortunate to live in the state of Connecticut, where marriage equality is valued, and hopefully other states will also do what is fair,” Kerrigan said.
The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled on Oct. 10 that same-sex couples have the right to wed rather than accept a 2005 civil union law designed to give them the same rights as married couples. A lower-court judge entered a final order permitting same-sex marriage Wednesday morning. Massachusetts is the only other state that allows gay marriages.
Connecticut officials had no information Wednesday on how many marriage licenses were issued to same-sex couples. According to the state public health department, 2,032 civil union licenses were issued between October 2005 and July 2008.
Like the highest courts in Connecticut and Massachusetts, the California Supreme Court ruled this spring that same-sex marriage is legal. After about 18,000 such unions were conducted in California, however, its voters last week approved Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment.
Gay rights groups said Wednesday they may ask California voters to overturn the ban on same-sex marriage if legal challenges to Proposition 8 are unsuccessful.
The California vote has sparked protests in several states, many targeting Mormon churches. Some have been vandalized.
Activists also are aiming boycotts and protests at businesses and individuals who contributed to the campaign to pass Proposition 8.

Here’s a video I put up of the march for anyone who’s interested:

As a Connecticut resident, I propose that we encourage every couple who would like to get married to come to our state. Unlike Mass., we allow all to marry here.
With married couples from all over this country going back to their home states, the tides will have to turn. DOMA is unconstitutional, and will soon be proved so.
Believe. And get inside those churches, become a member, and show them – those of you who believe – that religion need not discriminate.
Jeffrey – well said.
Actually, I did read the “leaked memo”, and the rest of the news. I just don’t think targeting the Mormom church is doing anything for us – besides pissing off Mormons. – Not they way to make inroads.
Regardless, the Mormon vote in California is relatively small. Personal opinion: Targeting the church for protest is just looking for a quick and easy scapegoat. The vote was so much more complex than that.
Filing complaints to have the churches tax exempt status removed, if they crossed the line, I can understand, and wholeheartedly support.
But protesting another minority group for its beliefs seems a tad…
The African-American community cast many more votes for the Prop than the Mormon community did, however where are the protest there?
For some reason – just like gays, it’s still ok to pick on Mormons. (And no, I’m not Mormon, a supporter or sympathizer. I just think it’s wrong to single them out.)
The Mormon church did not pass this alone.
Dana, it might air tonight on Logo at 7pm Eastern/6pm Central
I was there and was interviewed by Chagmion for CBS News on LOGO. Any idea if the piece has aired or when it will?
Well said, Jeffrey. I couldn’t agree more.
And why is it that there are no protests in front of black churches? Of course you already know the answer. Because it would be un-PC. We need to get very politically incorrect and put the blame where it is due regardless of whether they’re Democrats or Obama voters! If you think you can selectively persecute the LDS because they’re “enemy” Republicans, and not say a peep to our “friend” black protestant churches, you (we) are the worst kind of hypocrite.

Wonderful article. I would take exception with only one point … the last sentence of the first paragraph. What is being protested is the direct interference of the church in political matters in violation of the guidelines governing their IRS tax exemption.
Hey CM….Obviosuly you didn’t see the story regarding a “leaked memo” from the Mormon church dating back 11yrs…about thier “STRATEGY” TO fight Marriage Equality for the LGBT community..and that plan INCLUDED bringing the OTHER Religions into the FIGHT against LGBT citizens…to ELIMINATE thier rights.
“Mormons threatening violence against us?” BRING IT ON! – I’D BE HAPPY TO KICK YOUR HATEFUL/IGNORANT ASSES ACROSS TOWN!
ATTENTION ALL PROTESTERS:
When you go to a protest, be aware and be prepared. Some of the “loving” mormons are already planning violence against us. See: http://gaytheistagenda.lavenderliberal.com/2008/11/12/join-the-impact-alert-be-prepared/
Take care of yourselves and keep up the good fight. WE WILL NOT RELENT UNTIL WE HAVE EQUALITY!
Here here Berto. We are just getting started. Through their hatred and bigotry they have “awoken the sleeping giant”. It is exciting to see our gay community come together and FINALLY stand up for ourselves. I am so excited for Sat. and I hope that the momentum continues – it is time to ACT UP!!!
The Mormons are only the beginning. We need to continue to fight to get their tax-exempt status revoked…it is time to set an example – we honor your right to believe what you will…but mess with our civil rights by acting like a Political Action Committee and we will take you DOWN!!!! Hopefully, the other religious tax-exempt religious organizations will think twice before interferring. And for the record, it was estimated that the Mormons brought in excess of 25 million to the Yes on Prop 8. They are reaping what they have sewed. The time for passivity is over. I am proud of our community for coming together and finally doing something visible for OUR RIGHTS!!!!
cm: Mormons knew full-well what they were doing when they organized and strategized their followers in last week’s election. More than naïve, I consider it yet another slap in the face to be told that lesbians and gays are unfairly and prejudicially targeting them above others.
What your cult did NOT expect was the maelstrom that is growing against it, huh? You thought that we would cower in our homes, the eternally wouded, fearful of your moral wrath. Well, if anything, we have to thank you for galvanizing us in a way that this country hasn’t see since Stonewall.
Boycotts, not only of the state of Utah, your command-post of subversive terrorism against the citizens of California and by extension the entire United States, but anywhere else that the Mormon tentacle came be found. We know full-well that you were not the only ones at this orgy of hate, but you have the distinction of having opened a Pandora’s box; one that will shed light on the meddling of religious cults into the lives and civil rights of citizens. When the financial ramifications of this start to affect the wallets of other cults, sooner or later they’re going to point the finger at you.
If anything, we have to thank you for helping us unite, and say; “ENOUGH!”
Brace yourself for a protracted bumpy ride!
We owe it to the memory of Sylvia & Marsha to fight the good fight, and we WILL win!
Have a NICE day.
