Gates: No rush to end DADT

(Washington) Don’t expect any change soon to the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy about gays in the military.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says both he and President Barack Obama have “a lot on our plates right now.” As Gates puts it, “let’s push that one down the road a little bit.”

The White House has said Obama has begun consulting with Gates and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on how to lift the ban. Gates says that dialogue has not really progressed very far at this point in the administration.

The Pentagon policy was put in place after President Bill Clinton tried to lift the ban on gay service members in 1993.

The policy refers to the military practice of not asking recruits their sexual orientation. In turn, service members are banned from saying they are gay or bisexual, engaging in homosexual activity or trying to marry a member of the same sex.

Gates appeared on “Fox News Sunday.”

    • Bob, Shawn, the shame is not ours for daring to hope or our willingness to trust. The shame is his for breaking that trust and continuing to leave hope unfulfilled.

    • KaninZ said that we haven’t been a priority for Obama since the election. In truth, we didn’t count for anything during the campaign.

Obama probably remembers that most gays flocked to his banner even though he flipped on “gay marriage” and organizations like HRC and NGLTF backed him without making any demands on the candidate. 365Gay continues to front for Obama by printing the tepid AP wire story instead of headlining yet another Obama failure to deliver for our community.

    • Please folks tell me you weren’t THAT stupid to vote for this fraud?!? haven’t you LEARNED anything YET??? I shake my head in absolute disbelief and disgust.

    • “KaninZ and others, I love the way you all want to KNOCK Obama at any chance you can get.”

I am knocking. I will be knocking. I will KEEP knocking until he addresses the way he’s thrown us aside and cozied up to the Christian conservatives.

He’s done the cause of civil rights harm and has pushed our hope aside. That isn’t the change I voted for and he’ll have to work damned hard to earn my trust and support again.

    • Hardly surprising, considering the cast of characters. It will take violence to make our point; it always does, unfortunately. It wasn’t the decent men and women marching against racial discrimination that ended those practices: it was the riots throughout America after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Remember that gays rioted in San Francisco the night the Injustice system let Dan White go free. We have history on our side.

    • So, they are “discussing” the issue! Doesn’t Washington love to “discuss” policy improvements that need no further discussion, having been discussed to death for years. As for time constraints, what nonsense. Would it take more than ten minutes to prepare a brief order abolishing this silly “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule and securing the president’s signature? The fact is, they simply want to ignore it, so they don’t annoy the ultra right wing reactionary old guard in the military—the aging leaders still living in the 1940’s. There’s a simply word for this that everyone should understand: stupid.

    • When I asked the campaign boosters what Obama would do for us,the answer I got was that he would immediately end DADT,and ENDA and work for the removal of DOMA. So while he pushes us down the road again…..i’m thinking the question I should have asked was “What will Rick Warren’s little lap dog PROMISE (and then go back on)us?”. Where here is my promise…I won’t be voting again for any of these liars.

    • First of all, there will NEVER be equality in the military. Obama can sign a rainbow bill filled with many forward thinking rights, however females will never be treated equally, gay or straight.
Secondly, why do we want our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters fighting anyway?
Obama will never lift this ban because he would have to open up the marriage gates after that.
What human wants to fight for a country they aren’t allowed to marry in anyway?

    • This is really too bad but of no surprise to me coming from the obama administration. The man is a fraud and a user. The silence from the gay leadership in this country is deafening. This fool is another war monger homophobe. Stop being used.

    • Hmmm…looks like your “great” hetero commander in chief has just f*cked you all over yet again. still think the great “freedom” machine is worth dying and killing for now?
