Fla. gays to demonstrate at governor’s wedding

(Tallahassee, Florida) A gay rights group says it will state a protest at Florida Gov. Charlie Crist’s wedding on Dec. 12.

Impact-Florida wants is members and other supporters to wear pink T-shirts outside St. Petersburg’s First United Methodist Church where Crist will marry Carole Rome.

Following the wedding the group says it will follow the couple to the reception at a local resort.

“The demonstration will be peaceful and respectful,” Impact-Florida’s Lorna Bracewell told GaySoFla.com.

Bracewell told the online publication that the wedding provides a unique opportunity to shine a light on the injustice and unfairness of Amendment 2, the constitutional amendment that limits marriage to opposite-sex couples that was passed by voters last month.

Crist was an ardent supporter of the measure.

“He is exercising the same fundamental right millions of Floridians are now denied because of the passage of Amendment 2,” Bracewell said.

Crist’s wedding announcement surprised many in Florida’s gay community. There had been longtime rumors and speculation that Crist, a former state attorney general prior to becoming governor was a closeted gay.

During the 2006 gubernatorial campaign, independent candidate Max Linn, during an appearance on a radio talk show, said it is common knowledge in Tallahassee that Crist is gay.

“Charlie come out, come out from wherever you are,” Linn said during an interview on WFTL.

Crist has disputed constant rumors over his sexuality.

After speculation began over his possible naming as Sen. John McCain’s running mate, Crist announced his engagement to Carole Rome.

    • Crist fails.

The only straight politician in America who doesn’t fail at life is Gavin Newsom.

    • Doubtless, Charlie hopes there will be protests on the honeymoon, too. That way Charlie will have an excuse for his poor performance. ;-)

    • If the man says he is not gay, then he’s not gay. His impending wedding TO A FEMALE should be enough.

BUT DO NOT RESPECT HIS RIGHT TO WED WHEN HE HAS NO PROBLEM SUPPORTING MARRIAGE DISCRIMINATION IN AMENDMENT 2.

Gay Floridians and your allies, rise up and elect a progay Governor. Jeb Bush and then Charlie Crist? Two antigay FLA govs in a row?

    • I wish the governor all the best in his marriage… to Jason Wetherington. Crist’s sexual orientation is perhaps the worse kept secret in Florida (excluding Mark Foley of course).

So said Larry Craig, Ted Haggard, Jim McGreevey…the list goes on for those who have denied their orientation and married to cover it up, especially for political or religious reasons.

    • This is the most obnoxious idea I’ve seen in a long time. Let them have their wedding in peace and let come what may. We are not going to make allies and friends in our struggle by behaving like a bunch of a–es.

    • Equal civil rights were not gained by allowing the majority to determine which minority should and shouldn’t receive them. This is not democracy at its best, it’s anarchy at its worse. Freedom of peaceful assembly and to speak out against bigotry, discrimination, injustice and prejudice are the most cherished and powerful rights Americans have at their disposal. Have we learned nothing from history? Permitting a small majority to dictate rights on any minority, would mean some would still be forced to ride in the back of the bus, interracial marriage would be illegal, sit at a lunch counter, a woman’s right to vote or to choose, just to name a few, would still be the law of the land. Change is only created by having our voices heard and counted. To do less, allows some to determine the rights and future destiny of others. This is not what America stands for, Life, Liberty, the Pursuit of Happiness and Equality for All Citizens is.

I’ll be there to congratulate the Governor and his new wife on their marriage. And to ask when my partner of 30 years, and I, will have our opportunity to marry as well.

    • Man, the things folk will not do for politics.

I really feel sorry for the bride. Is it even possible she does not know he’s gay? What can she be getting out of this? Is it a prestige thing for her?

    • I want actual documented proof over hearsay and conjecture.

  • Morgan Said: December 1st, 2008 at 8:48 pm
    • Did Governor Crist have a proven former boyfriend whose name and photo can be found? I want to know, but to know yes or no in an actual and truthful fashion.
I am not interest in rumor, hearsay or conjecture. I want to know the truth about Governor Crist before I speak about it. I will not lower myself to his level by speaking non-facts about him.
