I stopped using them years ago. Most expensive gas here on Cape Cod, always ripping the tourists off. What a disgraceful company, never gives anything to the people. All the Mobil workers in the stations here are miserable. I am friends to several who have quit this company, it really sucks to work for them. Don't give this company any business if you can help it, most greedy corporation in the world.

I don't get this! It totally does not make sense from a business perspective. There must be a conservative toady at the top of the executive chain blocking the HR VP from just making this change. (If I'm remembering correctly, this stockholder thing is an end run around the executive team, right?)

>Time for another BOYCOT

Ummm...many have been boycotting for about a decade. My husband keeps me in line on this one. ;-)

Also, unlike a lot of other products and services that regular people purchase, boycotts of oil companies have been show to be completely ineffective. The percentage of their sales at the pump is such a small part of their overall business that a boycott will never cause them enough pain to bend them to our will.

My husband and I have a monthly gas expense of $300-500. We were Mobil users exclusively before the merger with Exxon. Since then we go out of our way to buy any other brand of gas. I realize our gas expense amount is nothing to Mobil (and the fact they didn't even acknowledge the return of our cutup credit cards verifies this), but our continued support of the boycott at least makes us feel a little better.

Matt: Assuming we don't have many exorbitantly rich people here, the strategy of buying shares in the company will not be effective.

ExxonMobil (XOM) has about 4.9 billion shares outstanding. Let's assume for the sake of argument that quorum at the shareholders' meeting is 5% (an extremely low value). Let's also assume that only exactly 5% of shareholders are present at the shareholders' meeting (unrealistically low). In order to have a majority on the policy vote, we would need to own 122.5 million shares + 1. At current market prices that would cost about $8.539 billion.

Maybe if every user of 365gay spent every cent they earned in their lifetimes on buying shares in ExxonMobil stock and never bought other goods and services like bread, cheese and electricity, we could do it... But not in the real world, even with the most favorable of favorable assumptions about the shareholders' meeting and what would be required to pass it.

Jim,
Those stations and stores are owned by the Exxon/Mobil, not by the small business people who run them. If they don't like that company, then all the company has to say is "not happy? just return the keys to us". simple as that.

Sorry, Jim,
those people running those Exxon-Mobil (Esso in Canada)do not get to rebrand the gas stations with another gas company name.

The only thing that works is for everyone is gay or who is gay friendly is to not buy from those 2 Exxon-Mobil stations. ZERO dollars and cents at the pump is the only thing the company fueling and supplying those 2 gas stations will ever understand. And gay- unfriendly companies in a gay-populated area should be "driven out" by an active lack of patronage by as many people as possible.

The company determines the prices not the small person who runs the station. The person running the station does not set the prices and does not benefit from higher prices. Higher prices benefits the company and squeezes the average person's wallet or purse. So I try to patronize only the all-cash station, since it's often the cheapest in my area.

But I've been hearing that Costoc auto gas is the cheapest of all. That is in the nesxt county from where I live and means a 6 mile drive to get there but if Costco is gay-friendly, I will go there, if not, I won't.

Time to check out buyers's guide put out for the GLBT consumer and buy from the gay-friendlier merchant of whatever it is that needed whenever it is needed.

Exxon-Mobil will remain on my "do not buy from" list. And gay issue aside, I haven't forgotten the company's arrogant attitude toward the environmental disaster Exxon Valdez caused.

Maybe "drewski" however, they ARE headquartered in one of the most progressive, gay FRIENDLIEST(yes! Gay FRIENDLIEST)nations in the world. I would rather patronize a Canadian owned business over an American/Saudi one ANY DAY!! As far as Irving Oil's policies toward Gays go I'm not entirely sure however it IS illegal to discriminate against us in Canada and THAT is a law which ALL corporations need to abide by. By supporting Irving you're also supporting the Canadian Govt. Oh Canada!! Long may she stand.

Shawn, the Irving family are not exactly known for their vast gay-friendly philanthropy. They're a major factor in explaining why New Brunswick can be so inbred and churchy.

Phillips 66 is ConocoPhillips. Phillips was based in Oklahoma, don't know where the larger company is.

Total is French. While France is a laggard on gay equality compared to some of its neighbors (Spain and Belgium), I have to doubt that any multinational based in the EU could get away with ExxonMobil's stance--they'd be cited for human-rights violations.

Isn't it creepy? What other global corporation has the same negative fixation on gays?
