Extra time for transwoman’s killer

(Denver, Colorado) A man already serving a life sentence for the murder of transsexual teen 18-year-old Angie Zapata has been handed an extra 60 years to his sentence.

Allen Ray Andrade was convicted of murder after beating Zapata to death with a fire extinguisher in July 2008 and sentenced to life without parole.  Now a judge has added 60 years for the additional charges of committing a hate crime, theft of a motor vehicle and identity theft.

At his trial, the jury heard taped telephone conversations of calls Andrade made while in jail to his girlfriend. In one call, Andrade told her that “gay things need to die.”

The defense maintained that Andrade “snapped” after finding out the teen was biologically male. But prosecutors successfully argued that Andrade knew Angie Zapata’s secret for at least 36 hours before the slaying – and killed her not in a sudden rage but because he disliked gays and transgenders.

It was the first case in which the state’s hate crime law has been applied in a case involving a transgendered person.

Colorado added sexual identity to its hate crime law in 2005. It is one of only 11 stages across the country that include transgender protections in their hate crime laws.

    • hahahhahahah!!!! You’re not getting out andrade! Have fun rotting in prison. I see you don’t like transwomen as sex partners? Well here’s some good news then. You’ll be intimately meeting a lot of “real” men in prison. Enjoy their incredibly masculine and obvious gender expression.

    • Gummi Bear, Governors and other officials can grant parole and amnesty regardless if a jury states life with parole or not. The Plus 60 is an additional crime and time in the event somebody considers amnesty.

    • I’m a little confused about Andrade’s sentencing. He was sentenced to life without parole, and then they added another 60 years. Does that mean that they keep his body for 60 years after he dies? What do they do with the body? Leave it in his cell?
