I find it very insulting that considering gays equal to other people has to be "debated".

Homosexuality is NOT a sin.

The main problem is the Bible is being grossly misinterpreted and taken out of context to support bigotry. The same was done many centuries ago to condone slavery and keep blacks as 2nd class citizens.

Basically what is happening can be seen in the following example. You read this in a book:

"That black guy is wrong"

Then you ignore the rest of the book. So by looking at this line, you think the person is wrong for being black. However, if you read the rest of the book, you find what is very clear:

"He commited murder"

Now you realize he was wrong not because he was black, but because he was a murderer.

The same reasoning and out of context is happening with homosexuality and the Bible. God never said homosexuality is a sin. People quote "man shall not lieth with man" You get the impression that it's talking about homosexuality. It's not. If you read the rest of Leviticus, you will see that idolatrous practices were the sin, not homosexuality. That's why female/female sexual relationships were never mentioned in Leviticus. They were not talking about homosexuality or sexual orientation, they were talking about the sin of idolatry, which was widespread during that time period.

Any educated Christian would know that. Scholars who have studied the Bible in context of the times and in relation to other passages have shown those passages (Leviticus, Corinthians, Romans, etc) have nothing to do with homosexuality. These passages often cherry-picked while ignoring the rest of the Bible. The sins theses passages are referring to are idolatry, prostitution, and rape, not homosexuality.

I suggest you read the following links to see what God really says about homosexuality. Don't trust the people telling you homosexuality is a sin. They are either lying to you, or blatantly twisting God's words to condone their hate.

Thats why Jesus never mentions it as well. There is nothing immoral, wrong, or sinful about being gay. Jesus, however, clearly states he HATES hypocrites. If you preach goodness, then promote hate and twist the words of the Bible, you are a hypocrite, and will be judged and sent to hell. Homosexuals will not go to hell, hypocrites will.

New item on web - it is done. Vote was something like 77 to 45. It is assumed that this for the Episcopal church rolls back any obstacles re more gay clergy.

This is all part of the end of the monstrous hatred of gay people, brought to you by the churches that gave us the hatred of the Jews and hence Nazi Germany, and the church that was the bedrock of slavery and creator of segregation.

Let the creep Benedict have a heart attack. I'm sure God has reserved a special place for a man of his intellect who can't get rid of what he learned growning up in Nazi Germany.

Maggots on alert.

And maybe the cardinals, whose red robes are stained with the blood of the 3000 gay kids and others who commit suicide every year, can do better next time.

Just in reponse to Robet's: "Why would it be a tragedy? Sometimes, being extremely careful only ends up with you not living your values…"

.... couldn't have come up with a better definition of our
'fierce advocate' in the Whitehouse, if I tried. Thanks will use it.

“If we are not extremely careful at this convention, we could find ourselves outside the Anglican Communion, and that would be a tragedy for all of us,” Bishop William Love of Albany, N.Y., said."

Why would it be a tragedy? Sometimes, being extremely careful only ends up with you not living your values...

Let the split occur.. Be done with them, and then live those values of inclusiveness. Your example will likely bring many of them back..

So the Conservative Anglicans bitch about gay priests and bishops in the US...but remain silent on Africans bishops and priests who have several wives, plus mistresses and "personal assistants" just because that is "the local culture"...ha?

SteveMD2 is using strong language, but I understand what he means and I basically agree with him. There's nothing Godly about hate and bigotry. Suppose the anti-LGBT parishes leave the Episcopal church, and they're only 5 to 10 percent of all parishes. The church will then be more solidly pro-LGBT; gay priests and same-sex marriage won't be an issue. The church will be less divided and will become a stronger force for love and acceptance of LGBT people. In today's accepting climate, the church could end up attracting more people than it loses by standing up for equality and basic fairness. This could show the Presbyterians and ELCA Lutherans that the sky won't fall if they become welcoming denominations. The end result could be very beneficial.
