Dramatic spike in gay hate crimes in Calif.

(San Francisco, California) A three-fold spike in homophobic hate crimes in Santa Clara County over the past year is being blamed on the fallout over Proposition 8, the voter measure than banned same-sex marriage in California.
More than half the hate crimes reported in the county south of San Francisco were directed at the LGBT community. Last year, 56 percent of hate crimes were designated as homophobic. The year before, it was 15 percent.“My belief from having done this work for many years is that surges in types of hate incidents are linked to the headlines and controversies of the day,” Deputy District Attorney Jay Boyarsky told The Mercury News.
Boyarsky monitors hate crimes for the District Attorney’s office. “Marriage equality and Proposition 8 have been in the news, and we have seen an increase in gay-bashing,” he told the paper.
Statistics from other California counties have not been released. The figures will be included in the state Attorney General’s annual hate crimes report to be released in July.
LGBT rights activists said they were not surprised by the report.
“When there’s a lot more information about gays and lesbians on TV or in the news, it brings out the worst in people who have an inherent bias against groups they don’t belong to,” Leslie Bulbuk, president of BAYMEC, told The Mercury News. “It seems like visibility makes people come out of the woodwork.”
Prop 8 leaders don’t dispute the findings but claim the report does not reflect cases in which supporters of the measure were harassed.
“I certainly hope Proposition 8 did not result in more crime,” Frank Schubert of Protect Marriage told the paper. “But if it did, it did so on both sides.”
Earlier this month the California Supreme Court heard arguments challenging the way Prop 8 was placed on the ballot.
The lawsuits charge that Proposition 8 is invalid because the initiative process was improperly used in an attempt to undo the constitution’s core commitment to equality for everyone, by eliminating a fundamental right from just one group – lesbian and gay Californians.
They also say that Proposition 8 improperly attempts to prevent the courts from exercising their essential constitutional role of protecting the equal protection rights of minorities. The suits say that under the California Constitution, such radical changes to the organizing principles of state government cannot be made by simple majority vote through the initiative process, but instead must, at a minimum, go through the state legislature first.
The California Constitution itself sets out two ways to alter the document that sets the most basic rules about how state government works, the groups said in a written brief to the court.
Through the initiative process, voters can make relatively small changes to the constitution. But any measure that would change the underlying principles of the constitution must first be approved by the legislature before being submitted to the voters. That didn’t happen with Proposition 8, and that’s why it’s invalid, the petitioners said.
The court has 90 days to issue a ruling.
A public opinion poll released last week found that prospective voters remain deeply divided over the issue of same-sex unions. Forty-eight percent said they would vote to repeal the proposition. Forty-seven percent would vote to maintain the ban. Five percent are undecided.

Exactly how many Christians have been beaten or killed by GLBT people on account of their religion?
Zero, that’s how many.
How many GLBT people have been killed by Christians in the past 2000 years?
Probably more than a million, and that’s a conservative guess.
You konservative kristianist kultists (KKK) are beyond disgusting. What part of “Thou shalt not bear false witness” do you not understand?

Let’s be honest. A lot of this is due to the fact that some protesters engage in taunting and employ “in your face” tactics. If you want respect and tolerance for your beliefs you must extend the same to others who disagree with you. Violence doesn’t have to be only physical and the attitude of many of the protesters is anything but peaceful.
Seriously? The Christian-Right is equating a woman’s cross being knocked out of her hands with the brutal violence incurred by the victims of these hate crimes? That’s just sick.
These attrocities are largely ignored by the mass media, but when the LGBT community boycotts *THEIR* businesses, suddenly they feel their loss is equal to OURS and go on all the news programs? I think the members of these anti-gay groups should be sent pictures of all the victims of HATE that their groups caused – SHOW THEM what their actions are doing to REAL people.
Bud Burgoon-Clark Said: “Exactly how many Christians have been beaten or killed by GLBT people on account of their religion?”
Not nearly enough, Bud. Not nearly enough.
gjdagis – you obviously have no idea how ridiculous your statements are.
A T-Shirt I read once: “So many Christians, so few lions” !
Christianity is terrorism. We need to fight these pigs tooth and nail. The War on Terror begins at home.

I would say the reverse is true. We were not “in your face” nearly enough.

Homosexuality is not a “belief”. Equality is ours by virtue of being born human, just as they were. Equality is ours because the U.S. Constitution says so. Beliefs have nothing to do with it. Asking me to respect their belief that gays are an abomination, less than human, pedophiles & perverts, the destroyers of “traditional marriage”, responsible for 911 and Hurricane Katrina, etc., etc… sorry, I’m not so self-lothing that my tolerance must extend that far.
“Violence doesn’t have to be only physical and the attitude of many of the protesters is anything but peaceful.”
And rightfully so.

Amen! Couldn’t have said any better myself!
I can’t help but laugh in utter contempt for all those people who want to judge gay men and women so viciously, and yet insist on playing the victim card whenever the tables are turned and society begins recognizing them for the hate-mongering filth they really are. That just NEVER ceases to amaze me. This is the same caliber of citizen who honestly believe they have the full God-given authority to place the fundamental rights of other people, their friends, neighbors and co-workers, to a popular vote!
And we STILL think this is a “free” country?!?!?
Are you all engaging in rough sex again and blaming the straight community for your violent co-dependent relationships? In solidarity to the LGBT community, slap a bitch for me.
“gjdagis – you obviously have no idea how ridiculous your statements are.”
Valid. Obviously assimilationist tactics are not working, and why should we sit by and wait patiently to be afforded rights we should already have?

I’m not a believer but if Christ were to come down to Earth for the first time today he would say:
Dad, these people you made are so fuc%edup. Kill the ones that say that they know what you want and leave the others alone for they are the ones that deserve your love.
RJLIgier – We blame those who are responsible – and a certain segment (though by no means all) of the Str8 community ARE to blame for the ills GLBT people endure. Are you some sort of closet queen? That’s the only reason I can come up with such idiotic posts on a gay website. Or maybe you’re just an idiot.
If you get gay bashed in California, thank a Mormon. The LDS church paid for advertising that depicted gays and lesbians as corrupting the innocence of children. LDS representatives stated that gays are out to “recruit” children.
This is called a Blood Libel. It’s a traditional tactic for inciting violence against a minority group. Depict gays as child molesters and they get bashed.
The Mormons make the Catholics and the Evangelicals look sane – and that is quite a feat!
