The essential argument is that the "full faith and credit" clause of the U.S. Constitution should trump any statute passed by Congress.

Good move by the court, from some of the posts I read many would agree with me, but issues like this should be dealt with on a state by state basis. The federal government already interferes enough with many things which should be left to the separate states.

@ David in Dallas--dammit! I saw that on the cover of a tabloid when I was at the store one night. Something like "Is Obama Secretly Gay?" Of course it seems outlandish...pretty family...temperate and successful career...who would come up with this.

For those of you old enough, I offer the strange case of Rock Hudson. It was well-known in some circles (especially in LA) that Rock Hudson was a big homo. He was on "MacMillan and Wife," then kinda went quiet until he was "sick." That was--what--'84, maybe early '85? Either the Star or the National Enquirer reported that Rock Hudson had AIDS *before* he went to a French clinic. All the mainstream US media denied it up and down--until they admitted it was true. Go read your Randy Shilts (rest his soul) again.

I'm not saying Obama is gay. I'm saying these two things: first, as already established, gays are the one constituency he has gone out of his way to avoid supporting. Second, there were rumors of him hooking up with guys when he was "experimenting"--with drugs, presumably not other forbidden things like penises. Rumors. I'm not making a claim that the President is a closet case, or that he's in denial. I'm saying that our mainstream media have established themselves as sycophants and accomodationists and opportunists, and that even a tabloid has managed to trump the mainstream in truth-telling. That's a sad indicator, but it is a thing that makes a thinking American go "Hmmm."

We need to heavily infiltrate the DOJ with qualified and experienced GLBT employees knowledgeable especially in the judicial branch of the US government.

Only then will this type of nonsense and rubbish start to lessen at DOJ. Also other branched of government, let them also become saturated with experienced GLBT employees.

The people of California themselves will determine whether the attempt at marriage equality was a "waste of time" for them. We non-Clifornians have no right to judge such deeply person things for them.

Thank you DOJ!!!

We do ourselves a great disservice by knee-jerk screeching at the news as presented without doing some fact-checking.

I don't like Obama's backsliding anymore than you do, but the plain fact is that the DOJ did a big favor for LGBT people by knocking this case down. Their suit is a guaranteed loser, and in court, losing counts for a long long time, since that ruling would be used against later cases that could have won if not for the precedent.

It is a hard and unfortunate fact that any well-intentioned idiot can file a suit in America - and that they can do lasting damage by filing unwisely. The GLAD suit is so much more solid that it will either win or it will highlight how unjust this law is, and prompt Congress to repeal DOMA.

They are idiots to file the suit in the first place. Is that really a case we want to end up before the current Supreme court? I don't think so!

He's at it again. Maybe Obama is a closet gay. He sure SUCKS well when it comes to equal rigts under the constitution. Maybe we should take back the emancipation proclaimation and see what he has to say.
