David Hyde Pierce says he married longtime partner

(New York) After keeping his private life out of the spotlight for years, David Hyde Pierce has announced his marriage to longtime partner Brian Hargrove.

The former “Frasier” star spoke candidly in an appearance on ABC’s “The View.” Wearing a wedding band, Hyde Pierce revealed they tied the knot “very quietly” in California on Oct. 24.

The actor and Hargrove, a producer, are still legally wed despite the California Supreme Court’s decision Tuesday to uphold Proposition 8. The gay-marriage ban was approved by voters in November, stopping legal nuptials going forward.

Angered by the ruling, Hyde Pierce said Thursday: “It’s like, `Oh great, we made the cut.’”

He called it a “very odd thing” that strangers have a vote on his private decision to marry.

    • I have read all the coments posted, some good and some not so good. I think that no matter how you view his “coming out,” the fact remains that we do not have the equall right to marry. Some states will never make this determination either. It is all just so sad.

I understand his anger but in reality, it has always been so. People vote and the privileges of citizenship change. There are no such things as “rights”, only privileges. Those privileges are given with the stroke of a pen and can be taken away just as easily. Case in point, California.

    • Gerry, that is true in a sense,,,but not all people consider their sexuality a political statement. Perhaps my Hyde Pierce is amongst that ilk? Not all celebrities have to be the Face of the Queer. It is up to all of us to stand tall and proud and be united in our efforts to bring equality to the planet!

    • On a personal note, I’m very happy for David Hyde Pierce and his husband. Good for you guys. I wish you many years of happiness. Plus, every act of coming out helps, and I appreciate it.

Having said that, I put this coming out in the same category as Billie Jean King and Elton John: I’ll remain discrete while my fame is at its height, and I’ll come out after the potential career damage goes away.

It’s still good, and I’ll take it. And he’s completely free to set his own timetable for being discreet versus being more open. But he ain’t no Harvey Milk; “discreet” people are contributing to the problem (straights vote with us if they *know* us, and being discreet enables not knowing us). It would have had *far* more impact if he’d done it at the height of the run of “Frasier.”

    • This is a positive move forward and for David Hyde Pierce to be able to finally come out and announce his marriage to Brian Hargrove is a celebration of their committment and love for each other. And why should we not celebrate our unions and marriages, heterosexuals have been doing it forever and at the same time flaunting it in our faces. It was not so many years ago that Hollywood celebrities like Rock Hudson, Tab Hunter and Richard Chamberlain were forced to keep their sexuality hidden in the closet of shame. And now with the likes of David Hyde Pierce, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen Degeneres and Rosie O’Donnell coming out and being proud of who they are and who they love can only be a positive reflection of who we are. And that too creates the positive visibility which we so need as a community!

    • My congratulations to Mr. Pierce. He was very charming to me when I worked an episode of Frasier. The man showed up the first day looking like a transient! But he, John Mahoney, Peri Gilpin and Jane Leeves are sweet, sweet people. I’m very happy for him.

    • I would like marry in New England, most likely in MA, the one state that so far has stood the test of time. Marriage equality has been since 2004 or was it 2003 and still holding firm in 2009.

Even if California gots its equality back, I am not sure I would trust CA until it like MA has, stood the test of time at least half a decade.

Even though I would rather get married in Maryland when the chance came, I would likely feel at my age far more secure with a MA marriage license for a while at least. Get married in MA and then find some nice country to honeymoon in that treasures its beautiful old architecture.
