John Galt is right. When you let your sexual orientation completely define who you are, then you really don't know yourself. I am gay, but frankly, there are more important things going on in our society than my right to marry. That is important, and eventually we'll get there, but like I've said time and again, its a matter of timing. Other have said it took a while for inter-racial marriage to happen, and gay marriage will happen to in time.

I agree that Mr. Cheney is not a good person, but at least he is commenting on an issue that Mr. Obama is avoiding now that he is elected. Guess he had a little extra change up his sleeve.

I have one more thing to add. For all those who don't support marriage equality, just think on this. Marriage equality is not just about the ability to marry. It's about having the ability to choose. Yes, some of you will never choose to marry. That is your right. But for many the right to choose to marry isn't there. There is no choice. That, in and of itself, is discriminatory. So before you think we should not be pushing this, maybe you should ask yourself, What if by some outside stretch I want to marry, can I?

I have just read that we should be waiting for a perfect time for our equal rights. That we should be patient and not force this issue down the throats of Americans who don't side with us.

This was written by a person who just happens to be gay. What, did some meteor fall out of the sky and turn you gay? Did you have an accident that left you gay? To say you just happen to be gay is the most ludicrous thing I've heard in a long time. You don't have to define yourself as gay.....everyone else will. And, if the label fits....then by God wear it proudly!!! Trust me I'm not advocating standing on the corner yelling "I suck Dick," but have the self respect to admit that it is a major part of who you are. We, as humans, are sexual beings. Like it or not.

As for waiting for civil rights that are ours......WHY? If not for the Supreme Court rulings there still wouldn't be equal rights for everyone across this country. Blacks and whites still couldn't be married legally. Segregation would still exist.

People wake up and smell the coffee. Gandhi didn't free India from tyranny by being patient. South Africa wasn't freed from apartheid because they were patient. My dad always said the squeeky wheel always gets the grease. We should be making noise and plenty of it. Equality should not have to be begged for or bargained for. It needs to be mandated and then followed up by the appropriate laws.

Jonathan:

I truly appreciate what you have to say, especially since it is calm and level-headed. Of course I am grateful for the rioters of the 1960s and 1970s for establishing our cause for equality, but I don't think gay pride and progress has to be synonymous with drag queens, being flamboyant and accepting the mantra of "We're here, we're queer, deal with it." You can be proud to be gay and enact change without proclaiming it from a mountain; people of various religious beliefs don't have to be fundamentalists to be proud and love their religion, as I love my sexuality.

Obviously, I am for gay marriage, and I can do that without defining every living moment as me being a homosexual. It's human rights issue, not only a gay issue, and thus can be addressed from both sides of the argument. It's a matter of equality, not only sexuality.

I don't know what you mean about me not accepting the moment and being timid, but I am pretty certain gay rights can advance along with state rights, republicanism, and constitutionality, as evidenced in the six states already with gay marriage.

Sara,

How old are you? Jeesh, nothing wrong with political disagreement but if you are going to be nasty what's the point?

Sincerely,

James

"All for torture" - God, I am embarassed for you. We are not the sick animals that they are and aspire to a higher ideal. These people that are being tortured have received no due process and could, quite conceivably, be innocent - but as long as their torture makes you feel better, huh? You either have national standards or you don't - there is no grey area.
