Cheney on gay marriage: ‘Freedom for everyone’
06.01.2009 5:11pm EDT
(Washington) Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he supports gays being able to marry but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision.
“I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone,” Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. “I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish.”Cheney, who has a gay daughter, said marriage has always been a state issue.
“And I think that’s the way it ought to be handled today, that is, on a state-by-state basis. Different states will make different decisions. But I don’t have any problem with that. I think people ought to get a shot at that,” he said.
Cheney spent most of his speech, and during the questions and answers that followed, defending the Bush administration’s wartime policies.
He said that the jail at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba was necessary because its prisoners are too dangerous to be held elsewhere.
Cheney is writing a memoir about his years in government, which he said will highlight the successes of the policies set in place after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

I don’t care if he supported every GLBT issue there is, he’s an evil fuck.
Good to see a stalwart Republican realizing his own party’s belief system. Makes me proud to be a gay Republican.
There is no “pride” in being a gay Republican! What’s next? Jews for Hitler?
Not really an acceptable compromise for me. Equality isn’t a states issue. The states couldn’t decide individually on inter-racial marriage for too long (eventually the federal SCOTUS stepped in and mandated it everywhere).
The States can’t pick and choose whom they want to treat equally. It’s called the 14th Amendment FORMER-Vice President Cheney.
Okay…now I’m REALLY confused. Cheney is pro-marriage and Obama is anti-marriage??? WTF?
The earth is officially tilted on it’s access and nothing makes sense anymore.
Maybe fucktard obama can grab some courage and do the same…isn’t he supposed to be the good guy? But wait. Prop 8 failed and the day the ca supreme court announced it’s decision he just made a joke about us. Nothing more. Wow. If Cheney is my enemy and Obama is my friend we’re screwed.
So, according to Cheney, interracial marriage should be left up to the states as well. After
all, individual states alone should determine who has rights and who doesn’t — and the federal constitution’s guarantee of full equality for all Americans under the US Bill of Rights is irrelevant.
Hmmmmm…Cheney kind of sounds like that our current “Segregationist-in-Chief”, Barack Obama, doesn’t he?
More and more it is getting to be like: Democrat or Republican? What difference does it make?
Can you say “Third party” anyone?

im gay…and love! i wish everyone will stay out of others people ,bedroom….in sarasota fla they took away my job , place me on the street…. but they forgot there is a god in heaven .there is a judgement day they will suffer in there bed of thier last day on earth. i took care of people in the nursing home god ,do his job for all the things a person have done wrong
Unlike the majority of the LGBT community, I don’t let my sexual orientation define who I am, what I believe in, or how to act. I am first and foremost a Republican who just happens to be a homosexual. There are more important things than forcing the entire country to accept gay marriage when they’re clearly not ready for it. Instead of prematurely forcing civil rights, we can focus on other things. Like the economy for example.
The Republican party is pro-greed and pro-profit at all cost (pretty much the same thing) anti-environment and antigay.
Cheney was scheming, cunning, clever, Karl Rove’s “twin brother” whily, evil, etc.
Other Western countries generally recognize gay relationships nationally, not every country does relational things piecemeal, state by state like the USA does.
Only a true right-wing “conservative” would choose to harm his own daughter for personal profit. That is the crux of the problem. He has chosen to harm his own daughter, time and again, for profit. How many examples have we seen in history of men choosing to harm their own daughters? How many of those examples are now held up as “good” examples?
Cheney should be ashamed of himself. He owes a huge apology to his daughter. Then, he should apologize to all the other gay people he has harmed, and disappear from the political stage forever.
I don’t understand this whole, “let’s let the states vote on it,” mentality.
I live in Alabama, and I think most everyone in the gay community knows my state’s history when it comes to civil rights. Did Alabama vote and decide that black people should have the right to vote? NO. It took an act of the federal government.
If left up to the states my state, and several other southern states, will never pass gay marriage on their own.
I’m still amazed that The Penguin was our Vice President for 8 years. It’s about time he stood up for those “family values” we have heard so much about.
John, can you agree that you are a human and then maybe a Republican? It’s nice to see you are Pro-choice because I don’t think being a Republican is something we are born with. Into maybe. Not with.
I’m a human being first, I happen to be gay and live in America and once the country I live in catches up with it’s own rule of law I might even be a proud American.
The problem isn’t that we define who we are by being gay, the problem is we let others define who we are because we are gay. They have no right.
Let’s face it, Mary Cheney grabbed for the cash and stood behind daddy. Now that things are starting to look up it seems her daddy is going to stand behind her. Now she just has to stand up for herself.
Yes, the world is getting far more confusing than I am currently able to handle.
Gay Republicans. They’re like jellyfish. There are tons of them but they have no spines.
“Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he supports gays being able to marry”.
Please pardon my anger in advance, but, where the FUCK was he and his (new?) ‘belief’ for the last 8 friggin’ years? Why shouldn’t Mary Cheney (his lesbian daughter) be allowed to marry? He’s a lieing, hypocricitcal coward for not standing up for his own daughter’s equality then, and he’s not much better today, although his apparent ‘conversion’ is welcome news, as is his recently changed stance on gays serving in the military.
How did this lieing fuck end up as Vice President of the Free World? And why did America lie down and take his shit for so long?

Perhaps it would behoove you to go back and re-read some of the history of the struggle for “civil rights” and the struggle to make sure those rights are maintained. I believe it was the Republicans which spent the last eight years trying to convince the population that the blood of its sons and daughters is being spilled to protect our “freedoms” and to ensure that democracy is safe. While you may find it difficult to believe, that blood was shed to maintain the “freedoms of all citizens”, not just the straight ones. It is never “premature” to provide “all citizens” with their civil rights. With gay citizens having been promised “equality” since 1868, I don’t think the word “premature” would be applicable in this instance. Perhaps “long overdue” is a more appropriate choice of terminology. Who really cares if “they are ready” or not. They will live over “marriage equality” in this country. No one in any of the countries with marriage equality has died from it being the law of the land.
