Charlotte, NC commissioner asks: Your son was a homo?

After Mecklenburg County, NC Commissioner Vilma Leake spoke in favor of a domestic partnerships benefit bill – revealing that her son had been gay and died of AIDS – Commissioner Bill James asked her, “Your son was a homo?”

Steve Rothaus notes that James today sent an email to the FOX News affiliate WCCB-TV in Charlotte:

“Vilma is a religious hypocrite.”

“She was married to a Bishop in the AME Zion church. This church has historically opposed homosexuality.”

“In justifying her position last night in public she used her son’s ‘lifestyle’ and his death from HIV-AIDS to justify voting for benefits to allow individuals to use tax dollars to engage in the same behavior that resulted in her son’s death.”

“It is akin to someone whose son is an alcoholic and died from the disease, using his death from drinking as justification to have the taxpayers pay for more booze.”

    • Chris Sullivan –> Unfortunately, this idiot / bigot was probably elected and represents the majority of people in North Carolina outside of the Triangle. Nothing will probably happen to this fool.

    • People that go to the same church don’t all believe the same. Some have more gray areas than others and not everyone has the same gray areas. This similar situation arose with the pastor in President Obama’s home church during the Obama’s campaign for the presidency. I feel for her and I am glad she can do this in honor of her son.

    • Incredible that any person in a public office would make such a comment. Is there no end to the bigoted thugs this state elects? He is a disgrace to the Human Race, though one has to wonder if he really is part of it.

    • I guess I should be disgusted and shocked but I’m not.
None of this really surprises me.
No matter how far the zealots stoop, they always manage to hit new lows.
Sad that so many heteros feel the same way.
I just keep telling myself, things will change for the future, for the better.

    • I believe it is the clearly homophobic and very bigoted Commissioner James and not Commissioner Leake who is the religious hypocrite here. By comparing being Gay alcoholism, James is making a statement that being Gay is a disease or sin. It is not. However, unlike Commissioner Leake, he continues the lie that God does not want some people because they are Gay. Furthermore, he needs to realize that extending partnership rights to same-sex couples, is an encouragement to Lesbians and Gay men to enter into healthy, faithful and committed relationships, not place their health at risk.

    • @Lance Lanier: You may be right about Chrisianist beliefs. However, when one says one is a Christian, one has to take on the full mantle of what that is, and a lot of it is outright hatred of people who do not conform to the “Chrisian” mold. All Christians are compilicit in thier religions rights and WRONGS.

    • My prayers go out to Vilma Leake for losing a son to aids. May God watch over her and her family this holiday season. I think some christians need to be more compassionate, like Jesus would.
