2020. The government is telling us that serious change can not be made for 11 years? That's pretty pathetic in the digital age.

I'm afraid I don't believe the claim that this isn't about politics. It's not hard to clear this up:

* not married
* not married due to exclusion from this institution in resident or nearby States
* civil union
* civil marriage recognized by resident State
* civil marriage not recognized by resident State (occurred in another State, nation, or resident State subsequently banned it)
* non-civil, ceremonial marriage not recognized by any State

"Ceremonial" would also give another option to opposite-sex couples as well.

It would have also been very easy to ask if one considers their self:

* gay/lesbian
* straight
* bisexual

Considering the ease, this sounds like internal politics. As for 2020, if there's another anti-LGBT president, then they can simply block such a movement like Bush did so there's no guarantee; it would be better to get the ball rolling now so a future president has to at least deal with precedent.

I have to say I really like this compromise. I am a research administrator at a big university, so I live day to day with the compromises of what would be best, compared to what we can make paper/electrons in a computer actually do. They are rarely the same thing. I think this is a good step.

I also have to say that the more procedural stories like this I read, including the NIH program to help aging homosexuals, and the move to include LGBT individuals in HUD programs, and everything else proves to me that Obama was the right choice. These shifts are in a very real way more important than the big bills. They don't make dramatic news stories, but they prove to me that the campaign dollars weren't wasted. The alternative was Palin/McCain, and we wouldn't be looking at any of these policy movements, or good as signed Hate Crimes bill if McCain were our president. I really wish more people would step back and remember that like it or not American politics is on some level about the lesser evil. We got MUCH better deal than your average lesser evil.
