Caroline Kennedy supports gay marriage

(New York City) US Senate hopeful Caroline Kennedy says she supports the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Kennedy is seeking the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton who has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to be Secretary of State.

Kennedy is one of several people seeking the seat. NY Gov. David Paterson has not indicated when he will make his selection.

Kennedy’s position on same-sex marriage puts her to the left of both Clinton and Obama, who have said they believe marriage should be limited to opposite-sex couples but that they support civil unions for gay couples.

It does, however, put her on a par with Paterson, who supports legislation in New York state to allow same-sex marriage.

Kennedy’s position was contained in a policy statement released by her spokesperson after The Buffalo News sent her inquiries involving several policy areas.

“Caroline supports full equality and marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples,” Kennedy spokesman Stefan Friedman said.

Friedman also said that Kennedy “supports President-elect Obama’s plan to work with our military leaders to begin a responsible withdrawal.” He said she supports a ban on assault weapons and the expansion of health care coverage to all Americans.

Among the others seeking Clinton’s Senate seat is NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

    • I am glad to see such a high profile person supporting gay marriage. Lets hope that she takes Hilary Clinton’s seat in the Senate. Maybe she can be influential to those that are opposed to gay marriage.

    • Wow, unlike Obama, a Democrat with a spine.

    • That’s awesome. She’s got more balls than a hell of a lot of politicians. Lets hope she gets in there and shakes things up. People say she hasn’t any experience but, I’m hopeful that Caroline will get things done and learn along the way. Go Kennedy!

    • Then I support her. Paterson, have the decency of getting this woman into that senate seat where she can do some good.

    • It would be great to see her in the Senate. They say she doesn’t have experience but look were we are at with the people that do have experience. She is the change that we need.

    • Yeah, she’s got balls. The problem with politicians is that their balls fall off when they get in office.

    • Sure she does, right up until the day after she takes her senate seat. Then like Obama choosing Rick Warren for his invocation she will stab us in the back.

    • More guts than Barack - you have to give it to her.

    • Good for her - though the cynic in me has to wonder if perhaps she’s saying this to set herself apart from the other prospective candidates and align herself more with the Governor. Still, points for saying it - and real credit if she stands up for what she claims to believe.

    • I’m sorry. What has she ever done? Words are all pretty. Heck, Obama has pretty words. (See where those pretty words have gone?)

This woman makes Sarah Palin look like a political pro!

    • Trace I am taking away all of your lesbotarian princess points.

Caroline Kennedy had more political experience at 5 than Sarah Palin did at 50. Also, Caroline Kennedy is a Kennedy, and that fact alone means I support her. She also supports marriage equality and has a network of supporters, due to her Kennedy-ness, like myself who will send money.

Trace, most the time you make too much sense, however you are dead wrong on Caroline. She and her family have spilled blood, quite literally, for a country that treated their ancestors like dogs. “No Niggers and No Irishmen need apply”. The Kennedys have given their lives to the service of this country and Caroline is no different, not just that, she is a HUGE and important ally to have in our corner.

    • How could anyone make Sarah Palin look like a political pro????? If the NY senate gets her in office, she won’t be talking about seeing Russia from her back yard.

    • Trace, Sarah Palin is a polished “TURD”.

  • TANK Said: December 23rd, 2008 at 3:27 am
    • Lipstick on a pig? Hey, what’s with this polished misnomer about sarah palin?

    • In the United States we do not have a Monarchy. To think that someone is qualified based upon their Sir Name is simply ill conceived.

Caroline Kennedy has virtually no work history. He has rarely even voted in general elections (since registering in NY) and has not even been elected dog catcher.

If NY wants to further “stick it” to Hillary Clinton, the Governor should appoint this woman. If not, he should further look towards people that actually may have the qualifications to be a Senator.

Hell, with Caroline’s qualifications it really gives Fran Drescher a shot at the job.
