Canadian Candidate Faces Second Probe For Anti-Gay Remarks

(Toronto, Ontario) An Independent federal election candidate in Sudbury, Ont., is the focus of a second hate crime investigation, this one following a complaint that he told a radio station a prominent gay rights activist should be executed.
Toronto police said they’re-investigating "a threatening occurrence” after comments made by David Popescuto Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada, on Oct. 2.Sudbury police had already launched an investigation of Popescu following a complaint that he told a group of local high school students at a candidates debate on Sept. 30 that gays should be executed.
In the Toronto incident, Popescu was asked by AM640 radio host John Oakley whether Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada, should be executed.
Kennedy said Popescu responded "yes.”
In a phone interview from his Sudbury home, Popescu said he stands by the comments that have been attributed to him. He also said he isn’t concerned about facing possible prosecution.
"I can defend myself very well,” he said. "It doesn’t bother me.”
Kennedy called the comments “very disturbing,” adding she has no regrets about filing her police complaint even though it might generate publicity for Popescu’s campaign.
"It needs to come out in the open. I mean, he’s run in seven previous elections. It reminds us in the community and in the broader community that these types of homophobic, transphobic comments still exist. It’s a reminder that we still have a long way to go in Canada to address some of these concerns.”
Kennedy wants Toronto police to determine if Popescu’s comments amount to an offence under Canada’s hate crime legislation.
The Sudbury case has been referred to the provincial Attorney General’s office before a decision on laying charges is made.
Toronto police Det. Matt Moyer called it an "an odd case.”
"It’s going to require some Crown consultation,” Moyer said, adding that investigators have acquired a copy of the broadcast.
"Some of the issues are obviously jurisdiction,” he added, pointing out Popescu’s comments were made in Sudbury but broadcast in Toronto.
A decision on charges in the Sudbury incident is expected to take weeks.
Popescu, who is in his early 60s, has run in several municipal, provincial and federal election campaigns over the last decade.
He has established a reputation as a fringe candidate whose fundamental — even extreme — religious views have been consistently rejected by the overwhelming majority of voters.
He has routinely received less than one per cent of the vote in his campaigns.
In 2003, Popescu was convicted of assaulting his 89-year-old mother. His sentence included a judge’s order that he submit to a psychological assessment.
Major party candidates in the Sudbury riding have called for Popescu to be barred from public debates for the remainder of the election campaign because of his extreme views.

“Yes” to gays should be executed?
Har! Har! Har! Those straights and their wonky, satirical sense of humour.
Not sure what seems to need investigating… SEEMS fairly obvious to me, then again, I’m not privy to the straight’s wonky, satirical sense of humour. A failing of mine I suppose.
I have a suspicion though that were he to say Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Muslims, et al should be executed, there’d be little time lost in pressing charges.
Okay, so call me Mr Cynical.
I suspect that, if he had said that Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Muslims, et cetera, should be executed, he would have to be placed in protective custody for his own safety. Why is it that bigots feel safe when openly targeting gays?

Because by and large we condone it by our inaction. When Larry King was murdered, over 20 SCC groups asked for leniency for his murderer. What kind of message do you think this sends to the haters? As long as we don’t fight back, or limit ourselves to fighting with mere words, we will be perceived as weak and an easy target. Rule of thumb…don’t bring a speech to a gunfight.
You think that they’re going to do anything about this creature and his hateful comments? Don’t hold your breath!!
Again! Obviously this person has some very serious mental health issues. Seems no one is safe from this individual, including his mother. It is too bad that people like this don’t wake up one day to find that they have suddenly become gay for a day and must put up with all the intolerance, hatred and discrimination that the gay community has endured. And when they return to their heterosexual, bigoted selves, they might realize what pain they have caused.
I’ll make a standing offer for this guy- I will buy him a box of bibles, and a plane ticket to saudi arabia. His deal is to agree to hawk the bibles in Riyadh and Mecca.
And he will almost certainly see his own hatred tossed back at him. When the cry of Allahu Ahkbar is sounded (God is Great), and he hears for an instant the swish of sharp steel through the air.
It would be appropriate.
I thought we got adolf hitler died long ago, but sometimes I wonder what the term “born again” really means.
