California school district billed over lesbian minister controversy

(California) A school district has been billed $14,700 in law-suit related costs by a Sacramento legal firm representing a group of angry parents. The billing comes after the parents sued the school district, demanding materials related to a “Days of Diversity” presentation by a lesbian minister that caused a stir earlier this year.

“We think the fees are outrageous and we want documentation,” said Maggie MacIsaac, assistant superintendent of curriculum for the Castro Valley Unified School District. “We feel we were on the working end, accumulating materials and sending it to them. Their action was requesting information.”

Rev. Arlene Nehring spoke to Castro High Valley students earlier this year about her coming out process and the importance of accepting alternative lifestyles. A group of angry parents sued the school for information regarding the presentation after an email blast was sent to parents saying Nehring gave “step-by-step instructions on how to become gay and transsexual.”

The Pacific Justice Institute, the legal firm representing the angry parents, claims that a powerpoint presentation of the minister’s speech had been altered before it was sent to them.

“There was supposed to be a frame that said something to the effect of ‘Come out to yourself, come out to your friends, come out to your family and come out to God,’” said Kevin Snider, chief counsel of the firm. “There’s a community interest to find out what was shown in the classroom.”

    • Did the school adminstration review the presentaton before it was presented to the students? There are way too many questions that haven’t been asked or answered on this one.

    • Wow. Guess the recession has hit fundamentalist Christian lobbying groups. Didn’t expect them to start stealing from our schools though.

    • “There’s an inordinate amount of presentations that seem to be dealing with human sexuality orientation, but I didn’t see anything that celebrated traditional marriage,” Snider said.

He’s got a point, although, I wonder at the content of the material these angry parents would present. Must be chock full of Bible verses, outdated Christian morals and veiled discrimination.

    • Does the Christian Values Powerpoint presentation include slides of Mark Sandford speaking about his soulmate in Argentina and trying to fall back in love with his wife? No wait, That would be a Grimes Fairy Tale. Or a Ted Haggard drug induced Hallucination! I’m also seaching the web for the presentation I missed on how to be heterosexual and untrue to how God created me.

    • Would this same small group of parents complain if a minister of the religious right were to be speaking to children and misusing the Bible to justify hate? The religious right wants schools open to religion. They need to understand this religious voice must include more than just the fundamentalist minority.

    • “Rev. Arlene Nehring spoke about…the importance of accepting alternative lifestyles.”

Being gay and transgender are not “alternative lifestyles.” The right wing uses such terms to sway people against LGBT equality. Please use accurate language.
