The uninformed racism of a few posters here plays right into the hands of the right wing, which dishonestly tries to portray the LGBT community as intolerant. I think the prejudice on the basis of religion is counterproductive as well, as I've suggested previously.

People like Mr. Moore clearly know next to nothing about African history and civilization. Africa has been the site of many great cultures. The link I posted below addresses the civilizations along the Nile, such as Kush, Nubia, Meroe, and Egypt, but there were great kingdoms elsewhere in Africa as well. The Egyptian empire endured for millenia and, for much of its history, was more stable and technologically advanced than any Western civilization at the time. Greece borrowed its geometry and much of its philosophy and medicine from Egypt. There is evidence for astronomy in central Africa long before it emerged in the West. Urbanization occurred very early in Southern Africa. Anthropologist Margaret Mead described much of Africa as a lush paradise, and this didn't change until the encroachment of Western corporations in the 20th century.

Again, this WSU site isn't complete, but the info on Egypt is interesting, and the Kush, Axum, and Iron Age links are pretty good too:

I agree with Thomas and Tiger. I see this as having much to do with lack of education and mob mentality.
When my spouse and I got married last year after being together 14 years, The only person to give us a card and wedding gift was an African American woman co worker of his. (to be fair we did just run off to the courthouse).

Also one of my best friend's spouses is a very intelligent black lawyer who also worked very hard on no on 8. My Dad always taught me to judge people on a one by one basis.

People like Mr. Moore make me more than a little sick.

And my two cents is this: race has nothing to do with this conversation! Enough already.

Now, am I ignorant; I don't beleive so. I have to admit that I am somewhat appalled that there seem to be so many homophobic people of color, but I just don't see what race has to do with this conversation.

There are more than enough homophobes in all of the human race.

Now to 'Africa'; let's not kid ourselves to the false conlcusion that this huge and diverse continent is monolithic in culture, history, or any social construct!

We ought to stop 'picking' on a people and stop singling out groups. Iran - their people are msotly Persians, and would be classified as 'white'.

Burundi and Uganda are no prizes and not deserving of one cent of aid, but Iran actually kills Gay people. A little perspective is called for..

California, the great Bear Republic - uh, didn't they just vote for homophobic discrimination?

I guess what I am trying to say is that we have a long way to go in our struggle for equality, all over the world.

Let's make things right here in the USA; then we can throw stones at other countries. But you can be assured that I will ask my Congressman to pressure these African nations to stop their citizen-abuse.
Just as I will praise and support the Rep. of South Africa's progressive and Gay-inclusive government.

I agree with Tiger.

Anyone who hates a people (ANY race of people) just because of who they are, is in my mind an effing bigot. I do not CARE if they happen to be a gay bigot, they are STILL a bigot.

Bigots are the slime of the earth. PERIOD.

Is it wildly ironic? This country used to ban blacks and now black countries are banning gays.

I agree with Dave, " it's sad to see so much racism present in a community which is the subject of historical and contemporary prejudice"

This can be traced back to good ole' Western colonialism. Victorian ideals of sexuality interposed as something indigenous to Africa (and other colonized countries) when it is an import that is now commonly thought of as natively African when in reality queerness in the forms of homosexuality and various types of transgender and transsexuality existed in Africa pre-colonization.
