(San Diego, California) Former President Bill Clinton has come under fire from California gay rights groups for speaking to a trade group at a hotel being boycotted for its owner’s support of Proposition 8, the measure passed last November which bans same-sex marriage in the state.
Clinton is scheduled to address the annual convention of the International Franchise Association at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego on Sunday.The hotel’s owner, Douglas Manchester, contributed $125,000 to the Proposition 8 campaign.
Following passage of Prop 8, gay activists mounted a campaign to boycott the hotel. Several groups already have canceled conventions at the hotel – costing Manchester’s facility an estimated $2 million.
Among those who bailed out of meeting at the hotel are conventions for the International Foundation of Employee Benefits, the San Diego Board of Realtors, the American Assn. of Law Schools and the California Nurses Association.
The California State Bar Association is under pressure to cancel its annual convention at the hotel.
Gay rights advocates will protest Clinton’s speech Sunday outside the hotel.
“Public officials must lead by example,” San Diego Councilman Todd Gloria told The Los Angeles Times. “I hope President Clinton respects the importance of this issue and moves his speech.”
A spokesperson for the former President told the Associated Press that while the former president sticks by his views about gay rights, he plans to honor his commitment to give the speech.
Clinton has a mixed record on LGBT issues. He signed the federal Defense of Marriage Act which bars the US government from recognizing same-sex couples, saying at the time he saw it as a way of stopped a proposed amendment to the US Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.
Clinton also signed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” which bars gays from serving openly in the military. He said that the bill was a compromise to an all out bar on gays that would result in a witch hunt of homosexuals in the armed forces.
The Community of the Resurrection had a ministry to people with AIDS, hospital visitation, and gay homeless people 1976-1993.
At that point, we disbanded, because most of the members had died or moved away.
I continued to do weddings and funerals until I finally asked to be laicized this year, since I’m confined to a wheelchair and can no longer celebrate Mass.
We were NEVER Roman Catholics, but rather Old (Independent) Catholics; we never had much use for the Roman Church as an institution, though we believed most of the same things, except for papal infallibility and homosexuality being “seriously disordered.”
Father Thomas Joseph continues in the ministries; he’s also a chaplain to the local Dignity chapter.
Will Clinton back down? Will he honor the demands of unions and GLBT groups?
With his record who really gives a damn?
Clinton was behind NAFTA, welfare cuts and deregulation. He’s an open enemy of working people. Hillary Clinton served on the Board at Wal-mart for years. Clinton championed DOMA and boasted about supporting it on redneck radio stations. DADT, the codification of military bigotry, is his baby. He says that same sex marriage is the ‘kiss of death’ for Democrats and Obama seems to believe him. After all Clinton is the model Obama was cloned from.
That’s why Obama destroyed our chances to win in California when he told an audience of southern baptists at Warren’s bigotfest that his sky pixie friend ‘god’s in the mix.” Then the Warren baptists, mormons and catholics repeated that millions of times and emboldened the largely EuroAmerican hordes of bigots who clobbered us November 4th.
It was the Democrats who killed the hate crimes bill and who let Barney Frank and his Republican friends rape ENDA. It was those same Democrats, like Biden and Mikulski, who voted for DOMA and refuse to repeal it and DADT, largely because they’re Democratic (sic) laws to begin with.
No only did old Bill sell us out, it was the first thing he did in his first term. I personally heard the promise come out of his mouth at an election rally in N.Y. that his first act as president would be to sign an executive order ending discrimination against gays in the military. And his first act was to repudiate that promise under pressure. It was a forerunner of how easily he could be rolled and that he is a man of little principle.
What the F**K is “The Community of The Resurrected”?!? LMAO! Perhaps Mr. er…Rev. Burgoon could enlighten us all.
My goodness hetero bill clinton is giving a speech in defiance of the boycott against Mr. manchester. Surprise, surprise. What this piece of human filth needs is a copy of the bill of rights shoved up his tight, lil’ ol’ arkansas ass!! LOL!
this guy only cares about sex,power,money and himself….those are not in any order either! i regret voting for him twice but you know what they say about the lesser of two evils.

This is a bad article. Instead of listing the facts it just bashes Bill. He is not staying at the Hotel, or in anyway giving money to it. The orginization he is speaking to booked the hotel before prop 8 happened.
This doesn’t even register on my radar. There are many fights out there for us, and this just isn’t one of them. Too much of a non issue. It’s not like Clinton gave $100,000+ to yes on prop 8.
Ultimately though, he’s a straight guy. You really expect him to stand behind every single protest and boycott? Please.
The boycott is about revenge, we don’t need allies for that. What we need them for is to overturn it.
