Bid to repeal a Florida gay rights bill heads to voters

(Gainesville, Florida) Gainesville voters will go to the polls Tuesday in an election that could see repeal of civil rights protections for the city’s LGBT population.
Gainesville has protected gays and lesbians in employment and housing for a decade, but a socially conservative group balked when city council added gender identity to the human rights ordinance in 2007.Citizens for Good Public Policy collected enough valid signatures to have the measure put to voters.
The measure that would repeal the ordinance would tie the city’s human rights law to the protections offered by the state.
Florida state law does not include either gender identity or sexual orientation in the categories that are protected.
Citizens for Good Public Policy said that the main concern is the use of restrooms by transgendered people in restaurants and other places. But passage would wipe out protections for gays and lesbians as well.
Leading up to the vote, Citizens for Good Public Policy mounted an aggressive TV ad campaign. In one ad, a young girl heads from a playground into a women’s restroom. A scruffy man, lurking outside, darts in behind her. “Your City Commission Made This Legal,” the words on the TV screen read.
An advance poll over the weekend saw a higher than usual turnout with most voters saying the civil rights question was the reason.

Lord, yet another campaign of lies and deceit. Why can’t these people be sued for slander/libel and defamation of character?
These people have nothing better to do than try to make life hell for others. I think it’s called water trying to seek it’s own level. What a pathetic group of human debris.
“Citizens for Good Public Policy” what a Joke. If they really want to have a “Good Public Policy” why they don’t work in a legislation to ban all the crap we have to watch on TV about celebrities mess. As an gay immigrant that love America I cannot take how people like this group invest money and time in this campaign when we were asked to work together to get this country together and work for a better future. What a shame.
Sometimes even bad people say appropriate things that are applicable to modern issues. Regarding the hate-mongering homophobes such as the gang of sexually insecure folks affiliated with Citizens for Good Public Policy, Focus on Family, et. al., they are all by degrees BONKERS. Which lends valitity to Lenin’s statement, “Relegion is the Opiat of the People!”
Aha. The Taliban is alive and well in Gainesville. And just about everywhere else in this country to one degree or another. You can spot them by the fact that they wave the bible in their right hand while waving a hatchet in their left.
gwychooch,
just note, the quote is from Karl Marx, The quote originates from the introduction of his 1843 work Contribution to Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right.
“Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.”
Aha. The Taliban is alive and well in the city of Gainesville. You can spot them easily by looking for individuals who wave the bible in their right hand and an hatchet in their left.
Let them repeal the laws. Then go in and hit them with every civil rights violation under the sun and break them! When they dont have any money left then maybe they will get the hint.
I don’t know what happend to my comment. but as i was saying, hit them in the wallets. Alot of those entities have big insurance policies when it comes to civil rights violations.
As I read this story, i realized that the commerical that was aired reflected a heterosexual pervert commiting a crime.
I am suggesting that everyone who cares about our civil rights let the Florida oranges rot on the grocery store shelf, and write to the Florida Department of Agriculture, their travel websites, such as visitflorida.com, etc.
The Christian American Taliban is alive and well all accross america! Think twice before you go to a “church function” and drop your $ in the “gift” baskets!
Anytime a minority’s right is put on the voting CHOPPING BLOCK, we know what happens. SAD!
Well…let’s see…Florida (”Fluoriddah” as some arrivees say it) is presented as the most “Northern” of the Southern states. That’s resulted in near-destruction of the entire shoreline, and the whole state looking like Monmouth County NJ with worse planning, worse traffic and more palm trees. And somehow it’s created a nasty hybrid about as unwelcome as the africanized (”killer”) honeybee.
I mention this because a couple of other recent threads delve into the continued fantasy of the antediluvian South versus the “enlightened” coasts (the replacement for the South’s historical nemesis, the North).
Now, of all Southern states, Florida is far and away the gayest. But somehow, all those tan, melt-steel-with-that-flame faggots from places like Beachwood OH, Downingtown PA, and Mt Clemens MI, they just can’t seem to vote. If they do, it’s not in numbers to match the turnout from the megachurch just past the strip mall. They want that sun and sand so much, they’ll sell their souls.
This is no surprise. Florida is the land of the glass-closeted Congressman (Mark Foley), the almost-equally-closeted Governor, Charlie Crist, and a state government which makes Nigeria look like a model of modern bureaucratic efficiency and integrity. This is the Florida which produced Miami-Dade’s Anita-Bryant-led antigay initiative in 1977. This is Florida. There’s really no difference between Gainesville, Appalachicola, Aventura, or St Augustine, because every corner of Florida has produced its own freakishly antigay vitriol. Florida has made about as much electoral progress on gay issues in the last 20 years as Alabama, the illiterate redneck standard-bearer of the moment.
Jeeez! Over 30 years ago, Anita Bryant spearheaded a campaign in Florida to revoke gay rights. And now it’s happening AGAIN?!! What is WRONG with these people? Just ask me when the next time I plan to vacation in so-called “Sunshine State”! Never, that’s when!
If this bill passes there better be Protesting. STOP SITTING QUIETLY! The legal system is proving to be more and more difficult to get things passed through. If we have to resort to old ways we will. PROTEST PROTEST PROTEST! Do NOT LIE THERE AND LET YOU RIGHTS AS HUMANS BE TAKEN AWAY FLORIDA! STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS WHILE YOU STILL HAVE THEM!
