Ban on gay marriage linked to rise in HIV rate

Two Emory economists have found that a constitutional ban on gay marriage increases the rate of HIV by four per 100,000 people. This the first study of the impact of social tolerance levels toward gays in the United States on the HIV transmission rate.

The economists cite the passage of bans on gay marriage, such as the recent passage and upholding of Proposition 8 in California, as causing more underground sexual behavior due to an increase in intolerance to homosexuality.

“We found the effects of tolerance for gays on HIV to be statistically significant and robust – they hold up under a range of empirical models,” says Hugo Mialon, an assistant professor of economics.

Andrew Francis, also an assistant professor of economics, said that policymakers will consider the two men’s research when ruling on gay marriage.

    • We need SEX-ED. I just found out the largest HIV dating&support site Positivefish. com. It has more than 500,000 members!
      OMG! Why so many guys and girls on the site are very sexy? Why so many people infect HIV?

    • These are humungous jumps in logic. Can we focus on supporting marriage equality in Maine? Religious zealots hate us, and they’re obsessed with voting away marriage equality in Maine.

      We must not let those assholes get away with this, again!

    • That’s a very tricky statistical analysis they are proposing. I doubt very much that it “hold[s] up under a range of empirical models.”

      I’d want to see some replication in other studies before I take this in as “fact.”

    • Congrats Dave!

      I always assumed that this was the case. A lot of the gay marriage movement started as a sexual revolution and gradually slid toward mainstreaming. There are still many that disagree that we should try and mainstream. We should be proud to be different and not succumb to heterosexual rites of passage. I am not one of those. I do believe that much of the gay culture still tends toward promiscuity from our sexual liberation roots- and as the mainstream heterosexual tradition of finding a mate and committing to them becomes more of a norm, less promiscuity will occur. Its funny that those that hold promiscuity against gays wont let them form their version of a committed relationship (marriage). I’m glad we have come as far as we have i still want to fight.

    • I wanted to get married in California in 13 December, 2008 to my boyfriend of 14 years – but had to cancel because of 52% of people voting FOR Prop 8, oh well. Then I moved to Vermont (have an extented mega family over there anyway) and will soon get married there right on at midnight 1 September, 2009!!!!!!

    • Here is another famous quote – “Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman.” – [From that dumb and stupid slut face whore Carrie Prejean, she is so dumb she must have inbreeded with her father]

      For the record Carrie Prejean it is called “opposite-sex marriage”, not “opposite marriage” you whore!!!!! She is as dumb as a mule on a 100 degree day!!!!

    • ALL STATUTES THAT SAY THIS SHOULD BE REPEALED;
      “a union between a man and a woman” or this “a union between one man and one woman” – so last century!!!!!!!!

      IN 2009, MARRIAGE MEANS;
      “a union between two consenting adult human persons” – now we are moving with the times of the 21st century!!!!!!!

    • “Two Emory economists have found that a constitutional ban on gay marriage increases the rate”

      Shouldn’t that be something like “Two Emory economists have found what APPEARS to be a LINK between constitutional bans on gay marriage and increased rates…”?

      I’m no educated journalist or vaunted Editor in Chief of 365Gay.com, but I somehow though that there was *some* integrity for journalism here on this site, and studies like these were presented as just that – studies, with results presented as they are, research results not established facts.

      Shame on you Ms. Vanasco. Shame on you.

    • So…

      Since a person can’t get married, they’re less likely to protect themselves during sex?

      That seems to feed into the argument that the only legitimate relationships are married ones. Any one who isn’t married is a nasty whore?

      Simplification of a complicated issue you say.

      So do I

    • You cannot reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS and STD infections by denying LGBT people the right to form stable, loving and faithful marriages. You can only reduce the rate of these infections when all people, including LGBT people are encouraged to live and celebrate their sexuality, but to do so responsibly with social support for responsible choices that include marriage.

    • Absolutely, Karl. When there is no solemnly meaningful goal to strive for, there is less incentive to build a life together with a partner. Of course we are lucky there’s even Civil Unions, bla bla bla bla, but the over-riding sense of bigotry makes us less likely to transcend it. This is why discrimination is such a crime.

    • Could another explanation be that since less people hold out hope for marriage people are more likely to sleep around since they’re less interested in commitment?
