He surely knew he was “funnin’,” as there are, demonstrably, such things as bisexuals. During the ’60s, gay rights advocates like Carl Wittman were saying that out gay men refused to refer to themselves as “bisexuals” because it carries the implication they’re somehow better than gays. It appeared to Wittman as if it were like saying, “Yes, I go to bed with women [or men], but at least I go to bed with men [or women], too.”

Both Vidal and Wittman ignored the fact that human sexuality is a vastly varied thing, which is why Kinsey put it on a spectrum from completely straight to completely gay, with completely bisexual in-between.
